McGavin gets Golden Jubilee Medal Royal honour Neil McGavin of Morris was honoured Oct. 12 when he was given The Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for his contributions to his community. His son, Jeff, attended the ceremony in Goderich to receive the award. (Janice Becker photo) By Janice Becker Citizen staff Neil McGavin. Walton business owner, philanthropist and good neighbour has received a royal honour. McGavin was amongst 20 Huron- Bruce recipients of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal which went to residents who had made a significant contribution to the country, their community or their fellow Canadians. There are many in the area and across the province who would.- be acquainted with McGavin through-. his leadership in such organizations as the Ontario Retail Farm Equipment Dealers Association, the Britannica Masonic Lodge in Seaforth and the Ontario Plowmen's Association. Locally, he has served as president of the Brussels Lions Club and on the board for his church as well as Letter THE EDITOR, It was, without question, that I was surprised to find myself recognized as the Blyth Citizen of the Year. The vibrancy of a community can in large part be measured by the amount of volunteerism that is happening. As I reflect and look around me, I see very special people giving freely of their time, to get involved in soccer, Girl Guides, figure skating, softball, hockey, 4-H, Scouts, threshers, church and community groups. It is interesting to note that, it is working with 4-H clubs. His knack for public speaking is often called upon whether to welcome hundred of residents in celebrating the Stanley Cup with Seaforth's Boyd Devereaux or to lighten up a group of directors who are in desperate need of a joke, something for which McGavin is infamous. But aside from his civic undertakings, wife Marie tells of his humanitarian efforts, often giving eulogies or making calls of comfort to 'those left behind. He even has a list of friends who have lost loved ones that he calls each Christmas season to see how they are doing. McGavin also takes pride in the 'family atmosphere which he has nurtured at his farm equipment dealership in Walton. "He not • only worries about the employees, but their kids too," says Marie. the commitment by individuals, to these ongoing groups that makes the larger projects such as a soccer pitch, a community centre, - an arena, to become a reality. To the staff of the newspaper, The Citizen, I say thank you for promoting such volunteerism with this award. I do admit to a warm satisfaction on reading in your paper, that I was being recognized. But I accept the award on behalf of all the people who give of their time. Thank you, Lavern Clark. And with humility, McGavin gives credit to his employees, parents, family and wife for making it possible for him to achieve what he has. "Life is great, this is a great country and we have a lot to be proud of," he says. "Every day above ground is a blessing." "This community is one you can really work with. Everyone digs in to help and they should be proud of that." Nominations for the Jubilee Medal. in honour of Queen Elizabeth ll's 50th anniversary, were made by community leaders and municipal councils then forwarded to Huron- Bruce MP Paul Steckle's office.
