North Huron gets update on water situation
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen 'editor
Bryan Prouse of B.M.Ross and
Associates Ltd. attended the
Monday‘ night meeting of North
Huron council to discuss Blyth and
Wingham's water supply.
Prouse explained what needed to
be done to have Blyth's wells
brought up to regulations. The
concern when the hydrogeological
study was done was that Blyth's
wells were influenced by surface
water, a- situation which they
believed was the problem for
Walkerton.
However, Prouse said, it was
determined that this was not the case
for Blyth.
Upgrades do need to be completed
to meet the Ministry requirements,
though and Prouse said they have
applied for an extension for deadline
to June of 2003. "We have not heard
of anyone being denied the
extension," he said.
The only issue not "pretty well in
hand", slid Prouse is with regards to
a flow meter. He has been waiting
for a response from the Ministry to a
question. As long as he gets a
response, Prouse said he sees no
problem with meeting the deadline.
"As it sits today, it's conceivable. I
don't see a problem - yet."
The Wingham wells are also a wait
And see situation as Prouse is still
waiting for verification that the wells
are not under influence of surface
water. The first report said they
were, the second said not. "(The
company which conducted the
study) has to defend its final
decision."
The report was due the end of
December.
What follows will be an important
decision for council, said Prouse. If
the wells are under direct influence
of surface water then there will be
further treatment required.
However, if not, then council
should consider the future of well
#1. "It's been there for 100 years,"
said Prouse. "It's pumped a' lot of
_water in its day."
But a camera showed the well is in
rough shape . "It's been sitting there
not used and has a turbidity problem.
When it's turned on for a sample, it
exceeds the limit. There are many
things to be considered."
"Every day is a new day in the
water business."
Prouse recommended keeping the
well as a monitor site rather than
abandoning it as it would be cheaper
and -would allow for future use if
required. This depends, of course, on
the results of the surface water study.
Police
lay
charges
On Oct. 6 at 2:15 a.m. Huron OPP
attended the Brussels Country Inn
over three males causing a
disturbance in the bar.
One male had entered a back
room and came out with a paint can.
The can was open and the male
threw the contest about, splattering
paint on the walls, bar and floor as
well as other bar property..
The damage is unknown at this
time but a 20-year-old male from
Listowel has been summoned to
attend court in Wingham.
He has been charged with
mischief.
