PAGE 23 Members of the Women's Institute of Huron East, Huron West and Huron South travelled to Belgrave to participate in the County Rally. Attending from the Walton Women's Institute were Ruth Axtmann, Marjorie Humphries and Leona McDonald.. The county business of the Institute was conducted and the winner of the Institute-assisted 4-H bursary was Sarah Broadford, a veterinary student at Guelph - University. The guest speaker was a pharmacist from Wingham who spoke on the importance of vitamins. October is seatbelt awareness blitz and Walton was abuzz with the fuzz on Wednesday. Many locals learned the hard way, including me, of the importance and cost of not wearing your seatbelt, so remember to buckle up. There was one lucky lady I know who had the opportunity to attend Copps Coliseum on Thursday. Oct. 10 with her son to see Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Marilyn and Bruce McDonald, along with two others from Walkerton acquired tickets for the Queen's visit to Hamilton. There were 16,000 people there. A wonderful program of entertainment included singers, native dancers, gymnasts, the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band and Susan Aglukark. The ceremony of trooping and marching off the old colours of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regiment of Canada was very impressive. They then presented, dedicated and consecrated the new colours by the Queen who is the Commander in Chief of the regiment. Thursday evening the Walton Hall euchres started again with only Student council elections were held recently at Brussels Public School. The results are as follows, prime minister: Alyssa Gowing; deputy prime minister, Chase Chapman; minister of finance, Lauren Spink; minister of communication, Stacey Smith; minister of fitness, Chris Corbett; secretary, Lindsay Watson, Each class from Grade 4 through 8 has two class reps. Kindergarten students were working with the colour red. They made red jello, brought red snacks and red things from home. They have even made red handprints. • They discussed what kinds of thingS hands do, and have made a long strip of paper with all the things they could think of and then decorated it with their handprints. They are learning about nutritious snacks and when their birthdays are. The Grade is can be heard singing, I'm a Little Acorn. They are really . getting into autumn by learning about the colour brown and acorns: They made some turkeys to decorate their classroom for Thanksgiving. The Grade 2s have been busy working ,on journal writing and spelling this week. When you walk seven tables at play. They will be held every two weeks. The first winners of the year were Stuart and Lois Chamney with, 74 points. Coming in second place were Olive Papple and Beth Pryce with 70 points, Third-place - winners were Don and Pat Nolan with 68 points. The lone hand winners were Ed Stewart and Jean Keyes. On Friday. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Goderich, Paul Steckle, Member of Parliament for Huron Bruce. on behalf of Her Excellency the Governor General of Canada, presented 20 Golden Jubilee Medals. They are awarded to those persons who have made a significant contribution to Canada, to their community or to their fellow Canadians. Our well-known Waitoner,- Neil McGavin was announced as a recipient., As Neil was unable to attend, son Jeff McGavin received it. The ComMemorative Medal for Her Majesty. Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee was created to mark the 50th anniversary of the accession of her Majesty to the Throne. Congratulations to Neil. Mary Humphries and her extended family travelled to Elmwood to daughter Nora's for Thanksgiving. Doug and Marjorie Fraser travelled to Waterloo to daughter Carolyn and Gerry Sullivan's home to celebrate with family members. Fred and Heidi, Darrell, Jennifer and Adam travelled to Mitchell to Heidi's parents rOhn and Hannah Naters to enjoy Thanksgiving with family Members., Bill and Marie Coutts enjoyed the Walton Inn Thanksgiving brunch with daughter Connie on Sunday, then ' travelled to Seaforth on Monday to daughter Karen and Allan Carter's to enjoy dinner with their family. Families coming home were the Murray and Olene Dennis family, daughter. Peggy and John and girls Natalie and Adrienne, daughter Laura and sons Adam and Dan, daughter Elaine and Steve and son Kevin and son Steve had an enjoyable day together. Marilyn McDonald celebrated Thanksgiving on Saturday with her family at her home. Children Bruce, down the hallway, you can see some really great art projects hanging on the wall just outside their door. _Ms Ewener's room had a math test on Monday. The next unit will be geometry. They have started writing spooky stories to get in the spirit for Halloween. They are still studying the provinces and territories in Canada. Learning about land regions and communities is also a part of this unit. Science class has been all about magnets this week. They have really enjoyed. seeing what kinds of things they can pick up or move with a magnet. Ms. Ewener has been showing them how to play a few new games called, Elvis Tag and Ship to Shore. The students have finished compiling and publishing their first newspaper. The Grade 4s are learning about perimeter. Everyone is enjoying the experience of diamante poems along with similes and metaphors. In gym they are .working on fitness, organized games and team building. 40- They have been discussing democracy and dictatorship. This really helped with their class elections. Kasey King will be representing the Grade 4s and Heather, Cathy, Pat, Jim, and Jeanne and their families gathered to enjt2d_ family pictures. Keith and Gloria Wilbee and boys ' Kevin and, Mark were the hosts for Ian and Brian Wilbee,—Carol and Murray Henderson and boys, and Gloria's father Les Hart for Thanksgiving dinner. Gathering at Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald's were Jo-Ann's family, the Clarkes from Mitchell, Gerry, Paul, Doug, Nancy and their families and Aunt Grace and daughter Donna from Michigan as well as Leona and Karin McDonald. Coming .home in time for Thanksgiving were Neil and Marie McGavin and Keith and Bonnie McMillan from an enjoyable trip to Branson. They enjoyed al0-day Heather Hill will represent the Grade 5s. Grade 6s are still working on their picture plays and hope to have them completed soon. In math they are learning about decimals to the thousandths place. Mrs. Steinmann has begun a map and globe unit with the class. They are working on a bedroom project where they have to map out their bedroom: The intermediate grades are working on historical maps and discussing settlements in New France. in art they are busy working on _3-D perspectives using shapes. They will then begin working on landscapes. Ms Van Poucke has all her French classes working on projects. The Grade 8 class is going to be holding a potluck lunch this week to wrap up their fast food unit. The Grade 7 class is going to begin a unit on space and then create their own cartoons featuring the things they have learned. The Grade 6 studems are finishing up the unit, Pauvre Aldhonse. It is about a pig that is lost at the fair and the students have to use investigative words about identifying and describing criminals. The Grade 5 students are working on a weather unit.'l When they are holiday and saw a variety of shows including the Oakridge Boys. Neil picked up a few comedy tapes so expect to hear some new jokes from Neil. The McGavins arc also proud grandparents of a new grandson. Bryan and Heather Kelso welcomed Jared. Bryan on Friday into their family. Hayden and Jessica are thrilled. A reminder that the Walton Women's Institute meeting is Wednesday evening, tonight, at the home of Mary Humphries at 7:30 p.m. Celebrating Thanksgiving birthdays were Dianne McCallum, Viola Kirkby, Cheryl Ryan, Stefan Nichol, Greg Ducharme, Kathy " Huether. done they are going to have presentations in front of the class which will be videotaped for their viewing. The last of the French classes is the Grade 4 group. They are learning all about pets. When they are finished they will be able to tell you all about pets using the French language. The Grade .8 room has begun initial preparations for the annual Haunted House fundraiser. Charles Corbett is spearheading this venture and will host the event at their home along with some of the neighbours on Princess Street. The students will be involved with the preparation of props as well as being members of the Boo Crew. The proceeds will go towards graduation. The Walton Little School toddler class spent the week working on_ activities related to the letter A. The grouplavourite seemed to he. the very messy apple painting. They were fortunate to have a new Fanshawe co-op student. Nicole Lowe, in the classroom to help out. FROM WALTON Youth choir raps at Difff's service Members of Duff's United Church were greeted by Steve Gulutzen to the Thanksgiving Intergenerational Service. Abby McGavin joined Joan Tuchlinsky in the call to worship. The youth choir delivered the rap, 1 Prayed in the Tub. The invocation was delivered by Lucas Biesinger. The youth choir also sang the song Take Off Your Shoes. Scripture readers were Marie McGavin and Marion Godkin. A creative meditation was presented by Joan, Joelle Glanville, Bethany Black. Justin Biesinger, Laura Black and Brandon McGavin. McKenzie McGavin presented the earth, rock, water, plant, bread and wine as physical elements of the meditation. The reflection of what are we thankful for and how do we care for the creation was participated in by children and the congregation. The adult choir sang When all Thy Mercies. The offering was taken by Fred McClure, Jim McDonald and Keith Wilbee. A spaghetti dinner hosted by the new fundraising committee will be on Saturday, Oct. 26. The church is still seeking a secretary for the joint board and a presbytery representative. Greeters next Sunday are Dave and Brenda Linton.
