Budget major consideration
The original
Steve and Heather Michie's home needed to be expanded
as the family grew.
Welcoming entrance
With the addition of a garage and porch at the south end of
the home, the Michies now have a wonderful entrance
leading into a more practical foyer. Previously, the entry led
straight into the kitchen. (Janice Becker photo)

A local contractor/carpenter was
then hired to make their dream come
true.
A few modifications were made in
the plans, one of which might only
be conceived by a builder.
With the large addition on the
north end and an entry and garage on
the south-end, the builder felt the
finished look would be too long and
not pleasing to the eye.
The solution was' to build the south
end addition at a slight angle back
from the face of the house, thereby
breaking plane.
Other things to consider when
undertaking such a large project is
the budget.
"Give yourself a little extra," says
Michie. "Things always come up.
You have to allow room."
And don't be afraid of colour.
When they were painting the master
bedroom, "Steve asked me, `Do you
know they are painting the closets
purple?'"
"Yes, I picked it," I said. "Wait
until you see the room."
While the inside of 'the home is
finished, the Michies still have plans
for the outside.
Aside from the two-tiered deck,
Michie says the landscaping, to
include trees, shrubs and a pond, will
be completed over the next three
years.
After living through construction
and with work still to come, Michie
says, "We will be happy with.this for
years. We will stay a long
time." you determine before you start to
decorate what has potential and what
should be put into storage.
Arranging accessories does not
have to be difficult. With a few
guidelines you should be on the road
to success.
Here is what you should look for,
courtesy of WomensForum.com:
1. Evaluate items for colour,
perspective and height.
2. Accessorize one area at a time
from the collection.
3. Vary the heights of the objects
to be used together to stagger the
altitude. Groups of three often work
best. One of these can be greenery.
4. Do not line up two or more
items of the same size unless you are
