By Brent Kipfer, Pastor
-BrusSels Mennonite Fellowship
This August. my friend Jim Loepp
Thiessen. was in Kenya, doing mime
Bible teaching at the invitation of
local church leaders. While he was
there, he .got word that his father-in-
law was seriously ill. It was a
Wednesday morning.
His family was facing a crisis and
he was 12,000 km away. He felt
helpless. Jim wanted to get back to
Canada immediately - but the
logistics were a bit mind-boggling.
Jim cried out to God for help and
direction. When he did, a reference
for a Bible passage came to mind:
Psalm 27:14.
He looked it up to find out what it
says: Wait .for the Lord; be strong,
and let your heart lake courage;
wait for the Lord!
Jim went to an airline ticket
counter in Nairobi. The plane to
Dubai was over-booked by 33
people. The ticket agent told him
that there was no chance that he
would make be able to fly out that
day.
"Don't even bother 'trying." the
man said. While Jim was at the
airport he made a phone call back to
Canada. His father-in-law had died.
Jim left the airport.
A local pastor - Timothy - had
gone to the airport with Jim.
Members of the host church were
praying about the situation.
Timothy had a strong sense that God

was going to get him on that flight.
That day another pastor -
Desmond Tully - came to Jim with a
message. Desmond said that a Bible
verse came to mind and he was sure
that God had spoken it for Jim. It
was Psalm 27:14: Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take
courage; wait for the Lord!
About 40 minutes before the plane
was scheduled to leave, Jim returned
to the airport, and went to the ticket
desk. Was there any possibility that
he could fly out to Dubai?
The agent said that there was a
strong possibility. Quite a few
people had not shown up for their
flight. When the airplane left
Nairobi on Wednesday evening, Jim
was on his way to Dubai.
From Dubai, Jim had to contend
with _over-booked airlines - as he
made the next two connections on
his route. Would there be a spot for
him? In each case, he made it into
the air on. schedule - in business
class at no extra charge.
By Thursday evening, Jim was
with his family in. Winnipeg. He
heard about their experiences in the
past week. His sister-in-law had sat
with her father not long before he
died. She prayed, "Lord, take him
gently." Desperate for a word of
comfort, she said that God gave her
a verse from scripture. It was Psalm
27:14: Wait for the Lord; lie strong;
and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!
Sunday, Oct. 6 was a busy day at
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship.
Following the Christian Edacation
Hour, the morning church service
was held in the chapel. Pastor Brent
Kipfer led the service. Victor Dorsch
from New Hamburg assisted in a
dedication for Joanna Grace Kipfer,
daughter of Brent- and Sarah Kipfer,
and Andrew John Becker, son of
Dave and Teresa Becker.
Alice Martin gave the children's
story which tied in with the current
project for the children's offering.
Towels are being purchased for
children in Bolivia, with 50 towels
as the present goal.
The message was presented by the
Nithview Seniors Choir, from New
Hamburg in the form of a cantata,
Jubilee, under the direction of
Norma Jutzi.
A time of fellowship and a potluck
meal was held in the gymnasium
following the service.
At 5:30 p.m. a supper was shared
at the church with church leaders
from Africa, United States, and
Great Britain. At 7 p.m. an African-
style worship service was held by
the visiting group.
