Grey Central students in 'Miss
Henry's Grade 7 class, as well as a
few others, are bracing for their first
Hepatitis B inoculation on Sept. 24.
The fall open house was held on
Wednesday. Sept. 11 from 5:30 p.m.
to 7:30 p.m. Staff were pleased to
greet so many community members
in their classrooms and-share in the
dedication of Grey Central's new
outdoor learning areas.
The year's first school council
meeting and elections were held at
the end of the evening. Arlene
Canting was elected chair of the
school council, with Marie Blake
involved as vice-chair. Lori Martin
will he secretary and Brenda Boyer
will he serving as treasurer.
Mrs. Bowler and her senior
kindergarten students in
kindergarten A and B have been busy
greeting new junior kindergarten
friends. The kindergarten students
have been enjoying. thematic
literature that is focused on school
and entering kindergarten. One of
the highlights of last week was the
bus evacuation drills that everyone
participated in on Wednesday.
Kindergarten C teacher,. Mrs.
Smith, reports that last week was
tilled with many new beginnings in
her classroom.
Mrs. Goodall and Miss Hill's
Grade 1 and 2 students took a field
trip to the Safety Village in London
last Thursday. They learned about
the road signs while. driving small
vehicles around a miniature village.
Following the presentation of a fire
safety video, they also learned to
safely exit a building filled with
smoke.
Students in Miss Hill's classroom
painted pictures about school bus
safety. Mrs. Goodall's class also
practised fire safety at school when
they participated in the lire drill on
Friday morning.
In phys ed, Mrs. Goodall's class-
has been playing Duck, Duck. Goose
and Red Light. Green Light. Miss
Hill's class reports enjoying choir
each Friday morning. They have
been singing Going on a Lion Hunt.
Old MacDonald. The Farmer in the
De// and //sy Busy Spider. They also
began to learn a silly new song
called Skunk in a Think!
Mr. Park's Grade 2/3 class had
building time. where they got to
work with all sorts of construction
materials, like Lasy blocks, K'Nex
and blocks. In art, the class made
nutritious lunch boxes. In math, they
added and subtracted and worked on
interesting match activities using
shapes and flash cards.
On Friday, they participated in the
s,:hool's first fire drill of the year.
This week, Grade 2/3 students are
looking forward to marching in the
Brussels Fall Fair Parade on
Wednesday. They have been
listening to the weather forecast to
make sure that it will be sunny and
nice, for the parade on Wednesday,
rather than rainy, as it was last year.
Mrs. Taylor's Grade 3/4s are
training for cross country. In art, they
created pop-out name pictures. -In
science, Grade 4 built models of
pulleys. They used K-Nex. Every
pulley has a wheel, axle and chain,
belt, cable or rope.
The Grade 3s are learning about
the parts of plants, and how plants
get energy to grow, blossom and
produce fruits and vegetables.
Mrs. Colquhoun reports that the
Grade 4 and 5 students are studying
the calendar, number- and weather
vocabulary, as well as addition and
subtraction. They are also learning to
express their likes and dislikes en
francais. The Grade 5/6 class is
reviewing verbs.
Grade 7 has started to talk about
their possessions using de. The
Grade 8s are reviewing French
verbs, adjectives and vocabulary.
In addition to French, Mrs.
Colquhoun is also teaching Grade 6
science, and has initiated a study of
flight with her Grade 6 Science
pupils.
Mr. Walker's Grade 5/6 class
continued with its graphing unit. In
science, Grade 5s created energy
consumption journals. In social
studies, they were studying ancient
Egypt and in their study of
aboriginal people, the class was
studying some creation stories.
Miss Henry's Grade 7s have
started their poetry unit. They are
also starting geometry in math and
are continuing to study the Earth's
crust in geography.
The Grade 7s are enjoying soccer
instruction during phys ed. Girl's
volleyball will start this week.
To celebrate the accomplishments
of Canadian singer and songwriter
Gordon Lightfoot, who is currently
experiencing health problems, Mr.
Payne's class will be learning the
Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Home
from the Forest and• Song for a
Winter's Night.
Grade 8 students are looking
forward • to their playground
leadership training on Sept. 20.
