A Friend
For many years the Friends of the Museum have been cooking up pots of beans
over an open fire on the Reunion grounds.
What goes better with great music,
companionship and fun than food?
Food, as always, is an important element of
the Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion and
Hobby Show experience in Blyth, Sept 6-8.
And as with every year, there is a variety of
food to be had from morning to night.
Again this year, Gary Courtney and his
helpers will be steaming up the fairgrounds
as they take care of the corn roast.
Courtney steams the corn in the unique
thresher way and the recipe is not one you
should try at home. First you need some
rather unique cooking utensils; a well-
scrubbed 50 gallon drum with a lid and a
large steam engine will do nicely.
Attach one end of a steam line to a valve on
the engine and the other to a drum. Then take
30 dozen head of corn, still in their husks,
and pack it into this unusual pot. Now turn
On the steam and sit hack and wait for 20 to
30 minutes.
Courtney and his assistants will be
occupied with this task every evening for two
hours from Thursday to Sunday. When they
are finished, 200 dozen cobs ()I' corn will
have been eaten by over I,O00 people.
Other food will he available at several
locations around the park.. They are
strategically placed to make satisfying your
hunger and thirst very easy.
The Huron County Museum volunteers
will be stirring the bean pot as usual and there
will have some apple cider. to try too.
The beans are started early in the morning
and simmer over an open fire throughout the
day. As portions are ladled out of the big cast
iron pot more beans are added to the brew.
