414g Huron Pioneer Threq'ter Reunion
22-year-old heads special events committee
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen staff -
John Lowe of Brussels has never seen a
volunteer opportunity he didn't like.
For as long as he can remember, the 22-
year-old nursing student has offered his help
with community events, or anywhere an extra
hand was needed. "I've just always volun-
teered. I like to be part of what's going on in
the area and I enjoy working with people."
Thus it was that after visiting the Huron
Pioneer Thresher Reunion in 1996 with his
uncle, then special events chairman Wayne
Lowe, the Grade 11 student at the time
started helping him out. "I just kind of
jumped in."
His impressions that first year were
primarily awed bemusement. "Bag-tieing, I'd
never heard of such a thing," he says. "I
looked at all these old-time games that aren't
popular at all today and it really got my
attention. Watching people doing the belt
setting and I had problems just trying to
figure out what a threshing machine did.'
Not only has he figured it out now, but the
St. Clair College student, is in his second
year as chairman of the special event,
committee.
Though being a novice hasn't presented
any big problems for him with the events,
Lowe admits with a smile that bag-tieing still
remains a. mystery to him. "It's a problem
because I can't demonstrate it. I've tried but I
just can't figure it out."
In the event the bags must be tied with
slipknot then knocked over. The knot must
hold.
The trickier event of belt setting Lowe has
mastered, he says, primarily because he has
to take it apart when contestants are finished.
The biggest challenge for him, says Lowe
is in trying to get people at the Reunion to
participate in the games. "The numbers are
decreasing. We have the same people every
year, and we're glad to have them, but it
would be nice to see some new faces."
That the games may intimidate some
would-be contestants is a factor he has
considered. However, Lowe encourages
visitors to the Reunion to step forward and
give them a try. "Forget there's a clock, forget
there's an audience. It's all for fun and you
get the experience."
. While belt ,setting. has an element of risk,
which may deter the novice, Lowe says there
is still an opportunity for them to try. "First I
would have them watch the process, then I
would go through the steps and explain them
and why they are done. They should be ready
after that to give it a try.
Log-sawing is one of the most popular and
possibly one of the most entertaining for
spectators. Inexperienced participants may
not realize there is a real knack to performing
the challenge well. At's about co-ordination
with your partner and speed of course:: says
Lowe.
This year's Reunion is also offering a new
event for adults, the nail driving competitio'n.
In addition to heading the special events
committee, the young man helps with set up
and cleanup at the Reunion. -He also and
with the registration of some displays and on
the people mover. "1 like people and the
AssociatiOn keeps everybody- busy, helping
where necessary."
