THE CITIZEN, WEDNESPAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2002. uron Pioneer Thresher Reunion Steam engine operators take certification course Teaching safety With provincial regulations requiring steam engine operators to pass a maintenance and safety course, Bruce Shillinglaw of Hullett provided the opportunity for local collectors. (Janice Becker photo) By Janice Becker Citizen staff With new rules and regulations recently passed by the government pertaining to the operation of steam boilers, steam-powered machinery owners and enthusiasts quickly signed up for the approved course so certifi- cates would be in place prior to the summer showing events. Bruce Shillinglaw of the Londesboro area was one of many who participated in the 24- hour course offered in St. .Thomas, by Lambton College, last March. As of June 27 of this year, Shillinglaw said all those operating a steam boiler at a public showing had to have a :,team traction opera- tors' certificate. Though the regulation had been in the works for two years, it had taken many months for the course material to be pulled together. Aside from gaining valuable information regarding safety and maintenance aspects of steam boiler operation, Shillinglaw said the fellowship and making of new acquaintances was equally beneficial. Not only did the camaraderie make the course more enjoyable, but also it allowed participants to meet others who had the same interests. Shillinglaw also gives great credit to Gordon Tuck of St. Thomas who spent con- siderable time and effort in compiling the text material for the course. Two tests had to be written through the Lambton College course, one for the college and one for the government. Shillinglaw said the college test was very difficult and just three of 18 passed, including himself. One benefit of taking the course through the college was the credit given for 40 hours of operation. In order to acquire the required certificate, operators needed to pass the 'gov- ernment test as well as accumulate 80 hours of maintenance and 80 hours of operation time on a steam boiler. At this point, proof of such time is difficult to obtain, but is based on the honesty of par- ticipants as they had to sign affidavits con- firming their experience. Upon returning home after the completion of the course, Shillinglaw said it occurred to him that no similar course was being offered Continued on A-3
