THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2002. PAGE 11.
FROM LONDESBORO
School
year
begins
Everyday last week there was a
number of cars in the circle in front
of Hullett Public School, indications
that teachers and staff were
preparing for classes to begin on
Sept. 3.
There really is just one staffing
change this school year. Mrs. Lynne
McDonagh, who was supplying for
Mrs. Brall at the end of the last
school year, will now be the full-
time educational assistant at Hullett.
Kindergarten pupils will be taught
by Mrs. Black and Mrs. Kemp again
this year on a half-time basis.
Hullett actually has two one-grade
classes this year. One of them is
Grade 1 being taught by Ms Wiese
and the other is Grade 5 with Mr.
Caldwell. All other classrooms are
split grade rooms.
Mrs. Vandendool will teach
Grades 2/3; Mrs. Pickell has Grades
3/4; Grades 6/7 will be taught by
Mrs. Gilroy; and the remaining
most-senior students will have Mr.
Drennan.
Mrs. Turcotte-Lapaine will teach
French on a half-time basis. The
special education programs will be
handled by Mrs. Webster and Ms
Wyatt. Ms Wyatt will also do music
instruction.
In the library half-time as
resource educational assistant is
Mrs. TeRaa.
Mrs. Tebbutt returns as principal
to Hullett and Mrs. Miller as
secretary. Ensuring the pupils have a
clean environment in which to learn
is custodian. Allan Bosman.
The community welcomes all of
you back for another year.
Service
begins
with
special
treat
Churchgoers at Londesboro
United Church enjoyed coffee and
muffins prior to the morning service
on Sunday, Sept. I thanks to Barb
Bosman.
Ed and Mary Salverda were the
greeters while Harris Snell and his
daughters did the ushering.
Conducting the service was Rob
Parr of Clinton.
Flowers on the memorial stand
were in memory of Kent
Shillinglaw, placed by his family.
During the children's time, Mr.
Parr talked with the boys and girls
about how a caterpillar becomes a
butterfly while snuggled in a
cocoon. A butterfly becomes
beautiful through its struggle
emerging from the cocoon. Life,
too, is a struggle. However it is that
struggle that makes one the person
God wants them to be.
In the Matthew 16: 21-28
scripture passage, Jesus instructs
His disciples on how to carry on His
work after His death.
Paul's letter to the Romans, 12: 9-
21 is his recipe for how to live a
Christian life. Paul teaches that love
will' conquer evil.
Injustices happen in life on a
personal, local and worldwide level.
Following 9/11, everyone felt a
need to respond to that act of
terrorism.
Discussion and understanding
and mediation help in these
circumstances but prayer is the
most valid response we can make.
As long as the only concern is who _
or what is right or wrong in a
conflict, nothing will be resolved.
All of us need to really listen to
what others are saying, treat them
with love and respect and pray for a
resolution.
Mr. Parr suggested that if
Christians follow Paul's
instructions to personal solutions,
evil will be overcome with love and
lots of prayer.
The Sunday School is in need of a
teacher for one three-month period
for the Grade 1-2 class. If you could
help, contact Deb Stevenson (523-
4910).
PEOPLE AROUND
LONDESBORO
Did any of you happen to see the
hot air balloon Saturday evening in
the northeastern sky? From a
distance it was not possible to see
any identifying marks; however, I
believe it was red and white.
Although there seemed to be no
breeze at all at ground level the
balloon drifted slowly out of view;
another pleasant summer sight.

According to the longer range
forecast given on the weekend,
summer is going to linger for a while
yet with very little chance of
rain.
So, the threshermen and steam
show in Blyth should again have a
great attendance.
This is also the weekend of the slo-
pitch tournament and pig roast in
Londesboro. Leave the cooking to
someone else, support a worthwhile
cause and enjoy a few more outdoor
hours.
The wonderful summer weather
we've had since has made the snow
and cold of the May holiday
weekend an almost forgotten
memory.
Summer is a time for cruising and
the newly-constructed/paved roads
in our area have made travel
pleasant. The end result has made the
blip during construction worthwhile:
I lowever, what has become of our
village signs? Are we now a non-
entity? It's lufrd to give directions to
Londesboro when travellers have no
point of reference as to arrival.
It seems recently every week
recently brings news of For Sale
signs being posted on yet another
property in our village. It's sad to
know someone has decided to move
on but encouraging to hear of new
arrivals.
Rumour has it beautiful music will
emanate from the two properties
recently sold to new owners. More
about that in a future column.
Richard's (Bergsma) Custom
Carpentry has been at work all week
on the bell tower and roof at the
United Church. It seems some of the
leak was the result of rotten steel
sheeting Which has been replaced.
A slanted roof has been built over
the base of the bell tower; the bell
supports have been repaired; new
hinges were installed on the access
trap. door; and a new bell rope can
now announce the start of Sunday
services and marriages across the
countryside.
Congrats
Darcey
