A-C-W discusses
field tile outlet
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
council dealt with an on-going issue
regarding the outlet for field tiles at
the Aug. 6 meeting.
Charlie Culbert met with council
to dispute the berming up of his field
tile which outlets into the
municipality's road ditch.
Council said Culbert had been
informed several times that this was
not a proper outlet and he must find
ari alternative.
Culbert disagrees with the
municipality's decision.
The matter has been turned over to
the township solicitor.
After a committee of adjustment
meeting council approved a minor
variance application from Gary
McInnes for Part Lot 13, Cone., 13,
Wawanosh Ward.
In response to a recommendation
-from Golder Associates Ltd. council
will install another monitoring well
at the Wawanosh landfill for a cost
of approximately $2,400 plus taxes.
Council agreed to adopt the same
bylaw as Huron-Kinloss regarding
lawn watering for properties in the
township using Huron-Kinloss
wells.. A bylaw was passed
regulating the time, manner. extent
and s nature of the supply of water
received from Huron-Kinloss.
A motion from May 21 was
rescinded regarding Benmiller
waterworks. Council will advise the
county that it will not be possible for
Mr. Hazlitt to comply with the
current water servicing
requirements.
Council supports approval -of
consents as outlined in February,

Dusty skies
Under clear blue skies, racers kicked up a lot of dust at the Auburn Hills motocross Aug. 31
and Sept. 1. Riders in the 250 beginner class make a sharp turn at the top of the hill as they
maneuvered their way around hairpin curves and over jumps. (Janice Becker photo)
Letter to the editor
Province's reaction to ruling
proves surprising to writer
THE EDITOR,
As most of your readers will
know, on July 12, 2002 the Ontario
Divisional Court ruled (2-I) that
excluding same sex couples the
institution of marriage is
discriminatory and thus
unconstitutional in Canada.
Furthermore, unless appealed, the
government would have two years
to alter our existing laws so as to
reflect and recognize this
controversial decision.
While the decision itself was
surprising to me, I was even more
surprised by the reaction of our
provincial government. According
to the media, our premier was okay
with the idea that homosexual
couples should be permitted to enter
into the state of holy matrimony.
In fact, the provincial government
refused to appeal this decision,
choosing rather to point the finger of
blame to Ottawa. in short, even
though registering marriages is a
provincial responsibility, had
Ottawa not acted as it did, Ontario
would have sat idly by and
permitted this massive social change
to occur without so much as a
whimper.
Fortunately our _local MP, Paul
Steckle and the federal minister of
justice both supported a motion in
the House of Commons that
declared marriage to be a "union of
one man and one woman to the
exclusion of all others."
Even more importantly, the
federal government quickly decided
t(i launch an appeal, to the Supreme
Court of Canada, to ensure that
marriage remains a union of one
man and one woman to the
exclusion of all others.
While I strongly applaud the
actions of Mr. Steckle and the
federal government on this issue,
what I would like to know is why
has our provincial representative
' failed to take a stand on this
important matter? Does Ilclen Johns
echo the premier's support of same
sex marriage?
Sincerely,
Maurice Nicholls,
RR I, Dashwood.
