Derek Youngblut, left, and Brett Courtney enjoyed the final morning of their summer vacation
as they sat on bleachers at the Blyth fairgrounds and watched as dozens of volunteers
prepared the park for the upcoming Thresher Reunion. While fencing was rolled out, machinery
moved into display areas, stages placed and exhibit tents erected, campers continued to pull
into the campgrounds. (Janice Becker photo)

THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2002. PAGE 3.
By Janice Becker
Citizen staff
A lengthy discussion ensued at
North Huron council Tuesday night
when "it all came down to a choice
between Pepsi and Coke.
Having received a
recommendation from the Blyth
Heart and Soul campaign, which is
fundraising for the renovations to the
Blyth community centre, council
pondered which company would
provide the best profits and equitable
contract for the arena and
municipality.
Councillors were concerned with
the length on the contract.
Recreation and Facilities Manager
Dan Cousins, thought the nine-year
term could be adjusted to coincide
with the expiration date of the North
Huron Wescast Community
Complex contract with Coke which
expires in seven years.
There was also discussion as to
whether the contract should be full-
service or self-serve.
With the full-service contract, the
beverage company would visit the
arena regularly, refilling the
machines, collecting the money and
maintaining the equipment. A
cheque for the profits would then be
sent to the municipality.

With the self-serve option, arena
employees would be required to
refill, collect and maintain.
Some councillors felt staff had
better things to do in a larger, new
arena than count quarters from the
beverage machine while Councillor
Murray Nesbitt believed someone
should have the time to look after the
job.
There would also be the problem
of storing 40 to 50 cases of pop at the
arena.
Cousins said this only increases
the temptation for theft.
North Huron Wescast uses the full-
service option with Coke visiting
every week to restock.
Council accepted Heart and Soul's
recommendation to go with Pepsi
and opted for full-service.
Authorization was also given for
the installation of a new security
and phone system at the renovated
Blyth arena.
Wightman Communications will
install a security system for a
maximum of $2,279 and a phone
system for a maximum of $6,152.55
It is expected the costs will be
lower because some components of
both systems will be removed, said
Stewart.
The arena will also have wiring for
future computer hook-ups.
By deadline I didn't have the
125th draw winner's name, so I'll
have two winners next week.
Lawn bowling results for August
26 were: high, Jean Plaetzer and Joel
Thomas; overall, Jean Plaetzer. Aug.
29 winners were Graemc McDowell
and Bob Thomas. They tied for the
overall high score.
This has been a beautiful holiday
weekend to end the summer. The
kids were back to school on
Tuesday.
If you did something interesting
this summer let me know.
Theatre is over and thresher
weekend is just around the corner. It
seems to have come very quickly.
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Sept. I were Joann
MacDonald and Irma Mason. Rev.
Eugen Bannerman welcomed
everyone to church on such a
beautiful Sunday morning.
The children's hymn was Tell Me
the Stories of Jesus. Rev.
Bannerman showed the children
how to fold their hands to form a
church, the steeple, then open the
doors to see all the people.
His message to the adults was
there are many ways to pray. One of
these is praying at the table by
saying grace. Another is to pray
aloud, another is to pray in silence,
another is to pray by meditating and
by using a lighted candle.
There have been many proven
facts that people prayed for by
others have received bettOer health,
he said.
