Obituaries
GEOFFREY NELLES BANKS
Geoffrey Nelles Banks died sud-
denly on Monday. Aug. 19. 2002 as
the result of an accident. He was in
his 17th year.
Geoffrey was the dearly loved son
of Randy Banks of Freelton, and
Patty Banks and her friend Jim
Cook of Walton. He was the dear
brother of Cassandra Banks and
Tanner Leslie, both of Walton and
Brandy Leslie and her friend Brad
Ribey of Seaforth. He was the loved
uncle of -Tyler and Brooke Ribey,
and loved grandson of Ken Banks
of Bur-
ford.
Friends were received at the
Whitney-Ribey Funeral Home, 87
Goderich St. W., Seaforth on
Thursday, Aug. 22 from 2-4 and 7-9
p.m. Funeral service was held at
Duff's United Church, Walton on
Friday, Aug. 23 at 1 p.m. Rev. Joan
Tuchlinsky, Rev. Deborah Deauv,
and Rev. • Lorne Throwher officia-
ted.
Pallbearers were Jim Bucciachio,
Devin Blake, Robbie McClure,
Steve Henderson, Steve Carnochan,
Gerrid Dalton, Kevin McNaughton
and Barry Young.
Honorary pallbearers were the
Waltori Indians ball team.
Expressions of sympathy may be
made by planting a tree in
Geoffrey's memory or to Nature
Conserve Canada or Duff's United
Church.
JOANNE KING
After battling cancer for mote
than half of her life Joanne Edith
(Gilmar) King of Brussels passed
away on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 at
Wingham and District Hospital in
her 68th year.
She was the beloved wile of Bill
King and dear mother of Bill King
and his wife Tammy of Brussels and
Karla Button and her husband
Darryl of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She
was the dear sister of Jacqueline
Gowdy and her husband Ray of
Gorrie, and Don Gilmar and his.
wife Lois of Ancaster. Joanne was
loved by her six grandchildren
Justine, William and Kassandra
King, Laura Payne, and Lukas and
Brooklyn Button. She was also
loved by her daughter-in-law
Shelley Payne and her husband
Garry.
Joanne was predeceased by her
children Lloy Anne and
Christopher, and sisters Muriel
Attwood and Nadine Cathers.
Friends were received by the fam-
ily Sunday at the Schimanski
Family Funeral Home, Brussels.
A funeral to celebrate the life of
Joanne King was held on Monday,
Aug. 19 at Melville Presbyterian
Church. Conducted by the Rev.
Cathrine Campbell, there were trib-
utes, both musical and spoken, by
Carol Carter, Janna (Gowdy)
Dodds, Justine King, Jim Lee, Mary
Douma, Margaret McInroy, and
Darryl Button.
Joanne was a graduate of
Walkerton High School and went on
to teach elementary school in Bruce
County. She then taught music in
Orillia and various rural schools in
Huron County. She taught piano in
her home and at Brussels Public
School.
An ARCT, she was the organist
and choir director of Melville
Presbyterian Church for over 27
years.
In business she was a salesperson
and area manager for World Book
Encyclopedia. Her wide range of
interests and experiences made her
a sought-after speaker at various
conventions, local and provincial
functions.
She was honoured by her commu-
nity when she was named Citizen of
the Year for 1994 and asked to head
the Terry Fox Run in September of
that year. Later in life she took the
Palliative Care course and offered
wisdom, counselling and support to
other cancer sufferers.
Joanne will be greatly missed by
her family, friends and community. •

JACK-FISCHER
John "Jack" V. Fischer ,of
Bluevale, passed away at Wingham
and District Hospital on Tuesday,
Aug. 20, 2002.
Born in Grey Twp. on Nov. 5,
1907, Jack was in his 95th year.
Jack had a long history of com-
munity involvement, starting with
his election to Turnberry council in
1943. Afte.• six years as a councillor,
he became reeve in 1952 and served
as Huron County warden in 1956.
He was appointed clerk of the town-
ship in 1958, holding the position
for 18 years. He also served on the
Wingham hospital board for 24
years.
Jack will be sadly missed by his
wife Margaret and children Doug
Fischer and his wife Marian of
Bluevale, Loretta MacFarlane and
her husband Ronald of Kitchener
and Mary Templeman and her hus-
band Robert of Gorrie. He was also
loved by three brothers, a sister,
nine grandchildren and nine great-
grandchildren.
Jack was predeceased by a sister.
two brothers and a daughter.
Dorothy Louise.
Friends were received by the fam-
ily one hour prior to the funeral con-
ducted Friday, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. at
the Schimanski Family Funeral
Home, Brussels, with Rev. Jeff
Hawkins officiating.
Burial was at Brussels Cemetery.
Carrying floral tributes were
Cathy Dunbar, Ronda Martin, Gail
Fischer ' and Angie Dickison.
Pallbearers were Don Dunbar,
Kevin MacFarlane, Troy
Templeman, Todd Templeman, Dan
Woods, Wayne Fischer and Paul
Martin.
As an expression of sympathy,
memorial donations may be made to
the Canadidan Cancer Society or
Bluevale United Church.
WILFRED STRICKLER
Mr. Wilfred L. Strickler of
Brussels passed away on Friday,
Aug. 23, 2002 in his 88th year.
Surviving are his family, John of
Monkton, Sheila and husband
Ralph Adams of Atwood, Nancy
and husband John Vanass of
Mitchell and Lorne of Monkton. He
was loved as well by nine grand-
children and six great-grandchil-
dren and three Sisters-in-law,
Margaret Waddell, Madge Dickson
and Ida Hackney.
Mr. Strickler was predeceased by
his wife, the former Laura Hackney
and his parents.
Visitation was held on Sunday,
Aug. 25 at the Peebles Funeral
Home in Atwood. The service was
held on Monday. Rev. Cathrine
Campbell officiated.
Interment was at the Cranbrook
cemetery.
