From the Minister's Study
Jesus relates to us at our lowest moments
By Pastor Ernest Dow
Living Water Christian
Fellowship, Blyth
Barb. a cancer survivor. was
describing tor an audience one of her
lowest moments during
chemotherapy some years ago. She
was in hospital at the time: the
current dose of chemo had "burned
out" her gastrointestinal tract to the
point she could not even have a sip
of water. It was so painful it seemed
her throat and esophagus had been
"lined with razor blades".
That night as she weakly gazed at
her yellowed, bald body in the
bathroom min-or, she was suffering
so much she wanted to die. Having
put her faith in Christ some time
previously she half-prayed. half-
exclaimed: "God, all I want is a sip
of water!" -
Then a surprising thing happened.

An inaudible voice that seemed to
come from right inside her said, "I
thirst."
Barb realized that Jesus had said
this when suffering on the cross for
our sins (John 19:28). He understood
what she was going through. The
Lord related to her in her agony, and
wanted her to know that He cared.
The Bible tells us that Jesus, the
Son of God, became "incarnate" or
was horn as a human and thus
became Son of Man as well.
"The Word became flesh and made
his dwelling among us." (.1n.1:14)
Because He walked this earth
alongside us, He understands us
completely. He identities with our
pain, our thirst, our fatigue, our
suffering, for He too endured these
saute feelings.
His sufferings were part of the
Father's training plan by which His
Son would become complete, and
the source of eternal salvation for all
who obey Him. His sufferings are
what qualified Him to be able to help
us when we too are being tempted.
(Hebrews 5:8f; 2:18)
We have a High Priest who can
identify with our weaknesses,
sympathize with our suffering, and
relate to us in a healing way at our
lowest moment. Because He knows
what we're going through, redeemed
us from our sin at the cost of His
own life, and was raised victorious
over evil's power, we can turn to
Him for real help.
"Let us then approach the throne
of grace .with confidence, so that we
may receive mercy and find grace to
help us in our time of need." (Heb.
4:15t)
As it turns out, Barb survived that
low ebb. God's grace found
expression at the time in a wonderful
woman nurse who lifted her into the
tub and gave her a refreshing shower
in the moisture her body craved.
Afterwards, the nurse cradled Barb
in her arms and stroked her bald
head in a comforting way. •
Now, still surviving years later,
Barb is sharing with others how God
heard and helped her through
Christ's encouragement at one of her
lowest moments.
