Meeting rates also below norm Continued from page 11 becomes particularly obvious when the various amounts are related to the population of the municipalities. The stipend for the mayor of Huron East costs each person in that community approximately 31 cents. For Morris-Turnberry the figure is $2 and for North Huron, $1.90. Council members also receive differing amounts for attending meetings. In Huron East members receive $100 for attending council meetings and $50 for committee meetings. The schedule of fees for Morris- Turnberry ranges from $60 to $150 for meetings over four hours long. In North Huron members of council receive a fee of $60 for special council meetings or committee meetings only. Councillors in most municipalities will attend one meeting of council or committees a week. It is not unusual for councillors to • have several appointments to talk to ratepayers or trips to examine potential problems each week. These are not covered by meeting fees as they are considered part of the regular duties and are covered by the stipend. It would appear that anyone wanting to make their fortune in municipal politics should avoid Huron East. The comment from one long-time Huron East councillor during the budget discussions was that he figured he was getting paid the same amount per hour as he received when he picked berries as a 15-year- old student over three decades ago. SCHOOL BUS ries A,* Bus Safety Tips Brussels Legion Branch 218 Listen to your bus driver! • Keep aisles clear -- books or bags are tripping hazards and can block the way in an emergency. • Before you reach your stop, get ready to leave by getting your books and belongings together. • At your stop, wait for the bus to stop completely before getting up from your seat. Then, walk to the front door and exit, using the hand rail. Do not cross the centre line of the road until the driver has signaled that it is safe for you to begin walking. • Stay away from the bus's rear wheels at all times. • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street. • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter. • When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus. • Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus. • Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it's okay to approach. • Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out! • When on the bus, find a seat and sit down. Loud talking or other noise can distract the bus driver and is not allowed. Never put head, arms or hands out of the window.
