THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2002. PAGE 9 Lightning plays in tournament final The Blyth Lightning Mosquito team ended their season very well. Their last home game was on July 11 versus Wingham Aqua. Though Blyth put forth a good effort, they failed to put in a goal. They lost the game 3-0, with Jordan Good goal-tending. The following week versus Seaforth Centurions in their last game of the regular season, Blyth came out on top. Seaforth scored the first goal of the game, but Blyth soon came back with six more. The final win was 6- 2, with great goalkeeping by Joost Van Dorp. Goals came from Lucas Egli (three), Atom Cohn Bokhout, John Bokhout and Jaimie Parish. Assists went to Darren Bouman (three), and John Bokhout (four), Thirty-nine seniors from Exeter, Grand Bend, Lucan, Seaforth, Stratford, St. Marys and Strathroy journeyed by bus on Tuesday, Aug. 12 to Kingston to take part in the Ontario Senior Games. Huron-Perth-Middlesex district 29 convenor, June Hodgson, was delighted with the excellent level of participation and the number of medals won at the provincial games. Participants were selected at district playoffs which had been held this spring and early summer. The summer games are comprised of 14 events: lawn bowling, golf, swimming, walking, carpet bowling, euchre, bridge, cribbage, bid euchre, billiards, horse shoes, tennis, darts, and biking. The provincial games began in 1986 and are held every two years in a different location.- Queen's University in Kingston housed over 1,200 participants in the campus dormitories. On Tuesday evening the opening ceremonies for the games began with a colourful parade of participants from all 34 districts of Ontario. Many districts wore matching scarves or vests. This district all wore matching vests which had been made by district 29 women. The huge crowd of seniors was welcomed by provincial president The Ethel euchre was held on Monday, Aug. 19 with 16 tables at play. Winners were: share-the-wealth, Hilda Bridge, Viola Adams; high, Keith Turnbull, Lois McLean; lone hands, Walter Seiles, Isabel Gray, Iola Subject; low, Walter Bridge, Helen Cullen; tally, Grace Stewart, Norm Dobson, Marg MacDonald, Dorothy Martin, Annie Wight, Florence Broughton, Marlene Johnston. Jim McGillawee, Bea Noble, Harold Metcalfe, Agnes Harrow, Isabelle Bremner, Violet Smith. • The next euchre will be held on Monday, Sept. 2 at 8:30 p.m. The Lightning ended the regular season with a seven win, three loss and one tie record. With renewed confidence, the Lightning entered the year-end tournament in Lucknow, held July 23-27. The first tournament game was played July 23 against Goderich Knights of Columbus. It was a very close match, with no goals scored until late in the second half. Egli put one in for Blyth, but Goderich tied it up. The game ended that way, so they proceeded to a shoot-out with Blyth shooting first. The five shooters for Blyth were Parish, Cassandra Uyl, John Bokhout, Jenny MacDonald, and Egli. After four shots by each team, still no point was scored. Then Egli shot one in, putting the pressure on Norm Steeper from Lucan. The games took place Wednesday and Thursday. Each participant had two tries at their event and the final score was a total of both days. Thursday evening the participants, and guests, and the three hundred volunteers who ran the games were bused to the recreation centre at CFB Kingston for a closing banquet and awards ceremony. Cor De Corte -and Joe Van Dooren from Seaforth won gold medals for floor shuffleboard, Bruce Symons from St:Marys won a bronze for swimming, Glenna Dustin from Strathroy won bronze for snooker, Florence Heard and Grant Oliver from St. Marys and Gladys Bierling from Exeter won bronze medals for bid euchre (pepper). Gold and silver medal winners from the provincial games proceed to the Canadian Senior Games in Summerside, P.E.I. this Sep- tember. Last Friday, Wilfred Strickler passed away in Brussels at I4uronlea. Wilfred and his late wife resided in Cranbrook for many years. The community extends sympathy to the VanaSs and Strickler families. Dave Mason and Nanette Ziolkowski, who used to live in Annie Engel's house, which is now occupied by the Slaters, visited Tony and Sheila Terpstra last weekend. They also visited the Wiens. They brought their children Kyra who is Goderich, who also scored one. Jessica Nethery was put to the test next for Blyth, and put in the winning goal when Goderich could not do the same. Excellent goalkeeping through the game and shootout was done by Van Dorp. The following night Blyth took on the Clinton Cosmos. Blyth was two goals ahead with John Bokhout and Egli scoring, but Clinton came back to tie it up. Not wanting to go to another shootout, Bokhout scored another goal, winning the game 3-2. Van Dorp tended Blyth's net. The following night was the last game in the division, versus Lucknow Light Blue. Goaltender was Van Dorp, doing another great job. The game ended in a tie at two goals apiece. Scoring for Blyth were three and Walker who is six months old. Leslie and Yvonne Knight celebrated their 40th anniversary last weekend. First they had family and friends over at their place on Saturday and on Sunday there was a party with family and friends given to them at Jim and Dona Knight's in Brussels. Cathy and Frank Workman were on holidays in the Ottawa region. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Morton on their wedding which was held on Friday, Aug. 23. Fron Reilly will return home after his second trip to Paranagua in the south of Brazil. One of the largest agricultural crops in Brazil is the cultivation of soybeans. The company Fron works for has a contract to install automated machinery in a factory that processes soybeans into margarine. Kim also visited Brazil to be with Bouman and Bokhout. One assist went to Egli. Shooting for Blyth in the shoot-out were Bouman, Atom Jory-Lynn Uyl, Tony Bean, Cassandra Uyl, and Jordan Good. Egli provided great goaltending for the shoot-out under a lot ()I pressure. With all three boys scoring, and only one goal by Lucknow, Blyth came out on top once again, qualifying for the semi-finals:* The semi-finals put Blyth and Blyth against each other on July 27, as the Lightning took on the Thunder. The Lightning came out with a very close 2-I win, with Egli and Bokhout scoring. Assists came from Bokhout, Nethery and MacDonald. Van Dorp kept a good watch over the net in this game. The finals were against Lucknow Fron. She saw the local people, the culture and agriculture there. Staples are produce from banana trees, sugarcane, and papaya trees. Because Paranagua is a coastal city much fish is eaten. The country is magnificent. Dark Blue, who played a very hard game. Lucknow came on top with a 4-0 win. Goa'keeping was a joint effort in this game with Van Dorp and Good each taking a half. Overall, Blyth.played a good game and were very pleased to have come that far. Providing a very strong defensive line throughout the entire tournament were Good, Bean, Craig Salverda and Frank Van Hittersum. Playing half-back for the team were Kirsten Sjaarda, Parish, MacDonald. Nethery • and Luke Siertsema. Playing a strong offensive forward line were Bouman, Egli Bokhout. Cassandra Uyl, and Ben Walsh. Coaches Janet Bosma and Peter Uyl thank all of the players for their commitment during this- great season. Kim was there when the Brazilians won the World Soccer Cup and she said the country went mad with people pouring into the streets, speeial shirts, flags. pennants, ballorns. music. fireworks and partying.
