Blyth's hydrants
Preparing the surface
Paul Josling, left, and Jim Johnston made good use of a
power chisel as they cleared away a little excess cement
in preparation for the placing of the new boards at the Blyth
and District Community Centre. Local residents Josling,
Johnston, Dwight Chalmers, Dave Cook and Gary
Courtney lent a hand Monday morning when they help
install framing and boards at the arena. (Janice Becker photo)

The winner of the Aug. 23. 125th
calendar draw was Charlene
Carpentier of Nova Scotia,
granddaughter of Harold and
Adeline Campbell.
Fran and Dave Cook have a great
way of raising money to help buy
the thermal imaging camera for the
fire department. Perhaps you noticed
people running about looking for
something on Saturday.
Well they were on the hunt. The
teams were on The Great, Cheap,
Amazing Car Rally, Scavenger Hunt
and Talent Show all rolled into
one.
Congratulations to Captain Cathy,
Bruce, Jack and Randy for being the
winners and raising $102.48. A lot of
fun was had by all.
Fran and Dave hope to make this
an annual event. Congratulations for
coming up with such a great idea to
help raise funds and have a lot of fun
doing it.
On Saturday afternoon the Eighth
Line neighbours, friends and
relatives gathered at the home of
Sophie and Dietmar Schroecker and
family to welcome them back to the
neighbourhood.
While there we also helped
Dietmar celebrate his 50th- birth-
day.
Visitors this past week with Effie
McCall were her niece, Ruth
McDermott and friend Greta Linam
from Mississauga. Also her cousin,
Merle Steeves from Hanover. On
Saturday Effie's niece Jean
Newcombe from Moncton, N.B.
visited for a few days.
Many Edgar relatives travelled to
Petrolia on Sunday for their annual
pool party at Mike and Bev Park's.
A fun time was had by swimming
and playing games followed by a
delicious barbecue.
Those attending were from
Goderich, Lucknow, Wingham,
London, Belgrave, Brigden, Petrolia
and Blyth.
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Aug. 25 was Lorna
Fraser. Guest musician was Kim
(Craig) Hornyak.
The congregation was treated to a
duet sung by Kim Hornyak and
Bodie Craig.
The children's hymn was What a
Friend We Have in Jesus. Rev.
Eugen Bannerman's story for the
children was about the different
kinds of prayer, bedtime prayers,
grace when we eat, prayers of
thanksgiving.
His message for the adults was
based on the Serenity Prayer: God,
grant me the serenity to accept the
things I cannot change, Courage to
change the things I can, and Wisdom
to know the difference.
He spoke of how this prayer has
been used in AA meetings and has
helped many AA members through
rough times in their lives.

The idea of painting Blyth's fire
hydrants has inspired a similar
project in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Kayla Fisher,. the granddaughter
of Bill and Diana Campbell of
Blyth, suggested painting her town's
2,012 fire hydrants after a
conversation with her family.
After her classmates at Holy Cross
Catholic Elementary School
proposed some designs, the idea
went before town council for
approval.
With approval from the Youth
Advisory Council, a contest was
initiated. Twenty-nine youths ages
four to 15 and eight adults entered
the contest. Each suggested lesign
had to be patriotic in nature to be
approved.
