Continued from page 11 message is simple. "We just ask them to leave the civilians alone." While there is obviously danger for the CPT, Siegers says no member of the organization has never been killed. They travel in groups and stay no longer than six months at a time. "This doesn't mean we can't be killed, however." CPT takes calculated risks, Siegers says. "We walk into fear instead of running from it. We con- front it in as peaceful a way as we can." Stating that society could learn a good deal from Native Canadians, Siegers speaks of the value of get- ting to know each other before tak- ing action. "If people would talk. When you have to look someone in the eye you can at least come to a decision to live side by side." "CPT knows they can't resolve everything, but we believe in our hearts that non-violence is the way to go. Sometimes there's not much gained but there's a whole lot less lost than with violence. When peaceful solutions are sought, fewer people get hurt." PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2002.
