Walraven is joining Team Diabetes Canada, a joint venture with the Canadian Diabetes Association which 'has raised $1.3 million in the past two years and is expected to raise $1 million more this year. By committing to raise $10,000 for Team Diabetes Canada, Walraven said that he will be given one of the team's position in Iron Man Canada, held in August 2003 in Penticton, B.C. The Iron Man, Walraven explained., is a triathlon comprised of a four-kM swim, a 180-km bike ride and a 42-km run. He added the race is one of the premiere events of the iron man races around the world and that professionals can complete the event in eight hours. The officer said he plans on finishing within 14 hours and added that competitors only have 16 hours to finish. • The triathlete said 20 per cent of Team Diabetes has the disease, 70 per cent have family or friends who have the disease and the other 10 per cent di) it to help others, which is the case for Walraven. Though the disease hasn't affected his family, one- of his . daughter's friends has it and he has witnessed first-hand what steps have to be taken to control it. "It's amazing to watch kids take care.of themselves. They don't let it affect them and do things that a normal (child) would." Team Canada has 10 positions in the .iron man and they provide coaching services, .Walraven said, adding that it is hard to get a spot in the. race, To race, the triathlete said team members had to raise at least $7,500. Be added that he set his goal at $10,000. -"ATI - money is put towards research and advocacy for - diabetes." Walraven said he hopes to make people aware of the disease and its three types, insulin dependent type, 1, non-insulin dependent type 2 and gestational diabetes. He added that he wants to try and emphasize good eating habits and paying attention to sugars in food. "Canadian children arc at risk." he said, explaining that today's inactive children . are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which is usually caused by lifestyle and heredity. "A lot of people don't realize they have it," Walraven said, adding he plans on speaking to social clubs about the disease which is becoming more prevalent. "It used to be for old people." Walraven said he was shocked to learn that it is the number one cause of adult blindness, kidney failure and non-traumatic amputation. A Clinton resident 'for I4. years. as -a municipal and OPP officer. Walraven: said he has competed in triathlons for two years and has been in 10 races, including the olympic distance race in Goderich. He added he has competed in sprintS, olympic distances, half-Iron-Man races and next year's event will be his first. and maybe his last, full iron man competition. Walraven said he is in the Clydesdale class of triathletes because he weighs more than 200 pounds. To fundraise, the officer will he visiting service clubs, organizing a charity_ live-kin run and his children have suggested a kids' dance. He added he is asking people for suggestions. To make donations to Team Diabetes Canada call the Canadian Diabetes Association at 1-800- -RANTING or call Walraven at 482- 7099. All donations will receive a tax receipt.
