together in time for the next
provincial convention.
The conversation then steered to
price support and the ongoing
questions of. American countervail
tactics.
By reporting unfair subsidies
provided by the Canadian
government for various
commodities, the Americans are able
to win their case in front of the
World Trade Organization and levy
ex-port taxes. Prices can be
devastated.
They only have to prove that
damage was done to their industry,
said Wilkinson. "Much of the
problem occurs when we rely too
greatly on one market."
Programs have to be designed not
to create trade problems, he added.
In an interview after the session,
Wilkinson said this area is important
to OFA. "It is not rural, it is
agricultural."
"Agriculture got whacked hard
when the federal and provincial
governments balanced their books.
We have spent the last years trying
to re-establish funding," he said.
"There are a lot of issues still
facing agriculture (including) food
safety and the environment."
He also noted that the average age
of farmers is 58, which is up
substantially. There will be a
massive transfer of land in the next
10 years and programs will be
needed to meet the capital
requirements of young farmers.
One of Wilkinson's goals for the
OFA is to talk to urban consumers,
to tell them what farmers have
already done with regards to
recycling, environmental farm plans,
tillage, erosion, pesticide use
reduction, food safety and
stewardship.
"We are doing 90 per cent of what
has been asked." he said. "We have
the lowest food bill (as a portion of

need to appreciate that and shop

Wilkinson mused that maybe the
