Youth studies aviation at Cadet camp
Back home

stint at Cadet camp. (Photo

To many young people.
summertime is synonymous with
going to camp. And in most cases
that means a week or more of fun in
the sun and new friends. With so
many special interest camps
nowadays, one should easily find an
appealing camping experience.
Campers can strengthen their faith
in a church-sponsored environment;
indulge in a hobby such as
horseback riding or computers;
further their education at math or
music camp; hone physical skills at a
sports camp or investigate possible
future careers.
For three weeks in July. Steven

Although I don't want to think
about the end of summer, here is a
chilly note: Blyth Minor Hockey
registration will take place Saturday,
Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon and
Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 7 - 9 p.m.
at the Blyth arena. Although it seems
early, this gives -organizers an
opportunity to set up team rosters
and do scheduling.
Ladies of the village gathered in
the basement of Londesboro United
Church to fete bride-elect Jean
Crawford with a miscellaneous
bridal shower. Jean and Bradley
McVittie will be married on
Saturday, Aug. 31.
Family and friends gathered along
the river on Friday evening, Aug. 16
to help Sam Dougherty celebrate his
60th birthday. Following a barbecue
the group enjoyed a campfire, and
after dark Steven set off a number of
fireworks. You may have heard or
seen these before the fog rolled
in.
Jansen Masonry of Seaforth has
been repairing/reconstructing the
corner pillars of Londesboro United
ChM:eh recently. The bricks were
loose in'. the area above the roof
in particular- and were crumbling
away.
The below-ground bases of these
)illars were also reinforced. Time
tad vagaries of weather had taken
heir toll.
Dougherty attended Air Cadet camp
and studied Introduction to Aviation.
This camp, based at the Trenton
Armed Forces base, is fully funded
by the provincial government
through the Ministry of National
Defence. Similar camps are found in
all Canadian provinces and are an
attempt by our governments to
encourage young people to join the
armed forces.
Steven is a corporal in the
Goderich Air Cadet Squadron and
this was his second time at Trenton.
Two years ago he spent two weeks
doing basic training. Several others
from the Goderich squadron also
spent time at Trenton this summer in
a wide range of courses in two, three
or six-week sessions.
This experience is open to an air
cadet between the ages of 12 and 19.
Application is made at the local
squadron. The community officer
sends the applications and his
recommendations alongto a regional
office., Acceptance is based on an
availability in the courses a cadet
lists as options.
Steven was one of 190 cadets in
that particular aviation course and
studied meteorology, navigation,
principles of tlight, propulsion and
radio in the classrooms of Loyalist
College in Belleville. The group was
housed in the recently constructed
college dorms and travelled to
Trenton for practical study. This
course dealt with the operation of
aircraft and and was quite similar to
ground school in the process of
obtaining. a pilot's licence.
All courses were tested and each
cadet received a grade for academic
courses and badges for other learned
skills.
Steven noted that they did do some
model building, and rocket
launching and also had time for
recreation such as canoeing, etc. He
enjoyed the friendly, enthusiastic
and knowledgeable teaching stall.
Standard dress was regulation blue
pants and wedge (cap), light blue
shirt and parade hoots.
Steven would like to earn his
private pilot's licence and his
-experience at this camp can facilitate
that. Moreover, these courses can
help a young person decide whether
his future lies with the armed forces.
The training and service gained at
camp can help with acceptance into
the military or the reserves.
If Steven attends camp at Trenton
again next summer, he would likely
study gliding and power in a six-:
week session.
If you know some young person.
who might benefit from air cadets
and this type of camping experience,
more information can be obtained
from the Dougherlys at 523-9487.
The, Goderich squadron meets
weekly on Wednesday evenings
from 6 • 9 p.m. from September
through June.
