The Drawer Boy, which is hilarious, yet poignant and heart- rending showcases performance by three excellent actors. Jerry Franken, a favourite and veteran of the Blyth stage, appears as Angus, a confused and very forgetful man who has been sharing a house with his friend Morgan (Layne Coleman) since an injury in the war changed his life. Franken is masterful as the ambling Angus, unsure of the goings-On around him if there is the slightest upset. And, it is certainly upset Miles (Jamie Robinson) brings to the household when he arrives an enquiring big-city actor looking for inspiration from the two aging farmers. It is through Miles's prodding that Angus's and Morgan's lives are thrown into upheaval. Though the first act is filled with humour in its brief vignettes, it is the The. Their portrayals of anger, hurt, frustration and anxiety can be felt by the audience. It is in the recount of their life story, in its various versions, where emotion is pulled from the actors and given as a gift to those watching. In the end, there is a kind of understanding and acceptance for the life-long friends, almost a guarded truce between the two war vets. Though set in the early 1970s, the tales of farming woes hold true today and the jokes pulled on the city boy are olites which should cause more than just a chuckle for everyone. As someone who has a relative or two that spent their entire lives on a farm, Coleman's mannerisms and his deadpan delivery in conversations with Miles are -dead- on. _ Currently the artisic director of Theatre Passe Muraille, Coleman acted in the first The Drawer Boy in Blyth before taken it to Passe Muraille the following year. Franken portrayed Morgan in that production. Whether drawn to The Drawer ordered by phone at 416 870-0000, or via the web at: www.ticketmaster.ca.
