THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 2002. Agromart expansion gets one step closer By David Blaney Special to The Citizen The expansion of Brussels Agromart is one step closer after the Huron East municipal council made several decisions at its July 30 meet- ing. The council had previously agreed with a request to declare the northern extension of Albert Street in Brussels surplus and offer it for sale by tender. The Brussels Agromart tender of $1,000 for the surplus road allowance was the only interest expressed and council accepted it at the July 30 meeting. The company is proposing an expansion of their business to the land between their current location and the Brussels' fire station. The land would be purchased if their cur- rent applications for an official plan amendment and rezoning were approved. The land would need to be changed from its current designation of institutional to industrial and then rezoned as general industrial. At the meeting, a representative of Brussels Agromart Ltd. said that the new land would be used to construct an office and weight scale. He said the central location of the new office would provide a good overview of both the seed warehouse and the crop protection products building. The representative assured council that no chemicals would be stored on the proposed expansion. He also suggested that the proposed arrange- ments would work to pull more of the noise and traffic flow away from the residential area. The new building would be locat- ed closer to the lot line than allowed by the zoning and would need spe- cial permission. After some discus- sion the consensus seemed to be that the separation provided by CN Road and Cypress Street would mitigate this problem. It was also noted that there was sufficient room for buffer strips if they were required. Council indicated that they sup- ported the required change in the official plan from institutional to industrial and had no objection to the rezoning request. Driver charged in crash On Aug. 10 at approximately 4:45 p.m. OPP were contacted over a sin- gle vehicle crash that had occurred on Jamestown Road in Morris- Turnberry. The officer attended to find that 'a vehicle, a 1994 Chev Cavalier had left the roadway entered a ditch and struck a hydro pole snapping it in half. The hydro wires were hanging dangerously low posing a hazard to other vehicles. The driver of the vehi- cle had left the scene and no one had stayed to warn others. After things were cleaned up the owner of the vehicle was located and it was learned that an attempt had been made to remove the vehicle without letting anyone know what was going on. A 31-year-old male from North Huron has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a crash and failing to report an acci- dent.
