Supper conversations will never
be the same.
For at least six months, our family
studied baby name books and mulled
over hundreds of possible names:
James, Christopher, Elijah, Miriam,
Hannah, Blythe.... The due date was
approaching quickly.
There were so many great names -
but too few that fit well: some were
already used in our extended family,
others did not have the right ring
when said with "Joel" and "Micah".
Some did not have a meaning that
we liked.
When our new baby arrived, we
wanted to be able to greet him or her
with a name. After Joel and Micah
were born, they each needed to wait
a few hours before we knew what to
call them.
That's an odd time of life: to be in
the world but have no name. In one
of our talks around the family table,
Barb Hodgins was diagnosed with
cancer in December 1996. In her
battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma,
Barb has shown a remarkable ability
to encourage and inspire others who
face difficult situations.
Making her home near Kippen
with her husband Ward, Hodgins has
learned that there is life beyond
cancer - and beyond other
challenging circumstances.
Hodgins describes herself as "an
ordinary woman serving an
extraordinary God." On Sunday,
Aug. 25, she plans to tell her story in
Brussels at an event called Life
Beyond Cancer. This is an
opportunity to hear about what
sustains her and gives her peace
through suffering.
Held on the front lawn of Brussels
Mennonite Fellowship, Life Beyond
Cancer will include music by Phil
Main, Deb Siertsema . and Darlene
Vanderveen.
The event will begin with music
and _dessert between 6 - 6:45 p.m.
followed by Hodgin's story and
more music at 6:45 pm.
Life Beyond Cancer also provides
an opportunity to support the new
Wingham & District Hospital
oncology (chemotherapy) unit. This
new venture brings expanded
chemotherapy treatment to north
Huron County.
The oncology unit opened on July
1 and has been operating as a
satellite unit of London Regional
Cancer Centre.
The Ontario government has
provided funding for staffing and
major equipment.

five-year-old Joel said, "Everybody
should have a name; even
animals!"
It is breathtaking to hold a
newborn baby. Psalm 139:13-14
speak about this miracle from the
Lord:
"It was You who formed my
inward parts;
You knit me together in my mother's
womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and
wonderfully made!"
God creates us and seeks to give
us an identity that makes us at home
in the kingdom of God. As human
beings, we often misunderstand or
reject our identity as people beloved
by the Lord. Still, God pursues us -
and when we are brought back into
the promise and plan of God, we
receive a new identity - a new
name.
Sometimes this happens soon after
we enter a new relationship with
God: Abram and Sarai become
Abraham and Sarah. Jacob becomes

Israel. Simon becomes Peter and
Saul becomes Paul.
Many of us, however, will need to
wait until Revelation 2:17 is fulfilled
and faithful disciples of Jesus will
receive "a new name that no one
knows except the one who receives
it.
When we put our trust in Jesus, we
can claim the word of Isaiah 43 for
ourselves:
"Thus says the Lord,
he who created you, 0 Jacob,
he who formed you, 0 Israel;
Do not fear, for I have
redeemed you;
I have called you by name,
you are mine."
If our baby had been a boy, he
would have had to wait a bit longer
for his name to be settled. But on
July 9, we had a girl.
"Does she have a name?" the
midwife asked us.
"Joanna." It means "The Lord is
gracious."
Indeed!
