I have read that the days of sitting on the front porch after dinner are a thing of the past so I've made it my mission to disprove such a theory. Some say barbecues, decks, pools and fences have been detrimental to the "after dinner, front porch, sit a spell ritual". In my opinion, this would be too bad. At one time, sitting on the front porch must have been an important social aspect of a community such as Ethel. (Unless, of course, it involved the men sitting on the front porch socializing while the women tidied up from dinner.) On Sunday night I drove into town and glanced up and down main street looking for front porch people and I saw two — Bob .and Olive Cunningham. My search continues. I looked up the Farmer's Almanac website for Ontario weather and it says that September will be cooler than normal, especially the second half of the month. Skeptical? Well, it was right about the heavy July rainfall and the hot weather in late July, early August. I suppose we'll know soon enough. I have a riddle that you might like to share with your children or grandchildren but they should write it down to understand it better. What is it that occurs once in a minute, twice in a moment and once in a million years? The letter "m". See you on the porch. Midgets lose close one to Elmira Monday, July 29 the Brussels Midget girls met Elmira with a chance to replay a previous protested game. Brussels needed a win to keep hopes alive in the WOAA playoffs. Lesley Pepper was on the mound for the entire game for Brussels striking out 12. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third. Cassie Fischer reached first on a hit pitch and was able to advance on passed balls to score. In the fourth Elmira answered back with a homerun to centre to score two. They scored another single run in the top of the fifth. Brussels seeing that the time limit was hovering over their heads needed some runs. Amy Douma reached first on a walk and Nicole Lowe beat out the throw to first. Stacey Bowles hit a triple to tie the game. Catrina Josling hit a high fly ball to the infield to score the run and take the lead 4-5. However she 'was called out after the play for coach interference. With two minutes left in the time limit, Elmira would bat again. They scored on a long hit ball to right to tie the game. Brussels went to the plate unable to score Fischer from second. Brussels struggled in the seventh with Elmira scoring two. Rachel Speers kept the team's hopes alive with a single to left, then advancing on a passed ball. Jody Semple and Jenna Fischer were _unable to advance the runner finishing the game with a loss 6-4. The Brussels Midgets acknowledge all the parents and fans who came out to watch and support the team. M.
