Brussels U-11s play in year-end tournament
The Hullett PeeWees captured the
Tri-County A title, in two games,
when they took on Varna.
In their first playoff game, Aug. 6,
they secured a resounding 17-5
victory.
Down by one run after the first
half-inning, Hullett responded with
five runs by Darcey Cook, Stephanie
Archambault, Josh Nurse, Anthony
Wilts and Dallas Good.
They added seven in the second
and five in the third while allowing
Varna just four additional runs.
A homerun was slugged by Josh
Nurse. Brad Lapp added a run in an
unusual manner after he walked then
came home on errors.
Cook pitched eight strikeouts in
the game.
In the second game of the series,
Hullett topped Varna 19-4 with Cook
on the mound.
Hitting the plate in the first and
second were Cook, Archambault,
Nurse and Terry Radford, including
homeruns by Nurse and Radford.
Already leading 4-0, Hullett
opened the game in the third with
The Brussels U-11 squad took to
the field at home on a hot July 30,
beginning the game one short, but
soon having just enough players to
fill the roster.
Howick 2 took control early,
keeping the ball in the Brussels end
for much of the game. They scored
quickly, putting the ball in the corner
of the net behind goalie David
Grobbink.
Elli Schimanski made a nice kick in
front of the opponents' net and Emily.
Warwick worked the midfield in an
attempt to keep the ball away from
the home net.
A nice passing play began with
Chris Becker and Cam Schlosser on
defence then up to halfback Kelby
Krotz who- got it downfield to
Heather Hill and Gavin Bowers, but
the shot was stopped.
Denise Thalen and Josh Thalen
patrolled the sidelines, kept the ball
moving.
After Grobbink nabbed a shot in
close, Howick put another past him
for a 2-0 lead.
Becker slid to the side of the net to
push a shot clear and Matthew
Cardiff's footwork kept the play
away from the front of the goal.
Howick had several good shots in
the second half,_ including a penalty
kick after a hands ball in the crease,
but many attempts were booted' wide.
Grobbink made a couple excellent
leaping saves, knocking shots over
his head clear of the twine.
Howick closed out the scoring with
a kick over the heads of the defence
and past Grobbink for the 3-0 shut-
out.
In their first game of tournament
play, Brussels met Newton 2 Aug. b
at home. _
Brussels started strong, notching
the first goal early in the match when
Bowers put it in the net. Assists went
to Randy Zwep and Krotz.
Goaltender Andrew Lindsay made
several nice grabs to keep Newton off
the board until he was pulled out of
the play and a pass across the crease
was kicked in.
Thomas Johnston played a very
good game on defence, battling in the
crowds and booting the ball clear.
Also working hard to defend the net
was Robert Cronin, who stopped a
hard shot with his body.
Grobbink took over between the
posts in the second half, being called
on to deflected over-the-head shots
and kicks in close.
Newton went ahead for the first'
time in the game after several shots
had been deflected.
Finding themselves down 3-1,
Brussels offense kicked in, showing a
concerted effort to keep the ball in
their opponents' end.
Though only one score resulted, on
a shot by Lindsay, several near misses
had the fans on the edge of their seats.
Bowers had numerous shots as did
Lindsay, Krotz, Hill and Zwep.
Brussels took the 3-2 defeat.
At 8 a.m., Saturday morning, the
squad took to the field against
Wallace in their second playoff game.
The teams were very evenly
matched, making for an excellent
contest with good back and forth
play.
Bowers' shot early in the game was
stopped when the goalie slid across
the crease to block the play. Becker
then assisted netminder Lindsay by
kicking the ball clear after it had
gotten over Lindsay's head in the
crease.
Though Bowers, Zwep, Hill and
Grobbink kept the pressure on,
Wallace scored first when the ball just
slid by Lindsay and past the post.
Brian Burgess came out strong in
the second half, evening the score at
one.
Wallace took the lead late in the
game when a shot across the crease
deflected in off the post. Though
Brussels kept the pressure on until the
final whistle they could not even the
tally.
Thalen, Schlosser and Warwick
were strong on defence while
Annamieka Kerkhof. and Josh Thalen
worked the sidelines, Vanessa Ropp
worked the ball well through the
crowd to get it into the open. Thomas
Johnston showed his skill at
controlling the ball and playing hard.
Grobbink kept Brussels spectators
on the edge of their seats, making
several exciting stops.
The squad met Palmerston in the
final game of the tournament. The
opposition got on the board first,
splitting the defence and getting the
ball past Grobbink in net.
Some good passing was shown by
Bowers and Zwep as they took the
ball down field. Krotz got in on the
rush as the trio's effort at evening the
score was thwarted. Lindsay assisted
his goalie, kicking the ball clear from
the crease area.
Palmerston continued to add to
their total, holding a 3-0 lead at half-
time.
Brussels got on the board in the
second when Bowers booted the ball
across the crease with help from Hill
on the play. However, Palmerston
dominated the match, adding three
goals and taking the 6-1 victory.
