mainstage offering of the season,
Brighton Beach Memoirs.
Written by one of the world's most
beloved and prolific playwrights;
Neil Simon's coming of age comedy
has become widely regarded as a
modern classic in North American
theatre.
"I have always wanted to share
this comedy. with our audience at
Huron Country Playhouse," says
Alex Mustakas, artistic director of
award-winning Drayton Entertain-
ment.
"This production is both humor-
ous and poignant, and shows that the
miracle of life is something to cele-
brate."
As the title indicates, the Brightm
Beach Memoirs are really •the per-
sonal diary of a wisecracking 15-
year-old narrator named Eugene
Morris Jerome (the second worst
name ever given to a male child, he
points out; the first is Haskel
Fleishmann.)
Here is a boy whose greatest
dream is to play professional base-
ball for the Yankees or, failing that,
to become a famous author. Both
dreams disappear with regularity as
he fantasizes about girls, girls, and
more girls.
Eugene offers a unique perspec-
tive .on the world around him. The
setting is New York City and the
year is 1937. The Great Depression
is in full bloom and World War II is
looming. Eugene's widowed Aunt
Blanche, and her two daughters,

stress to an already delicate financial
situation.
The production captures a I ew
days in the life of this struggling
Jewish • household, and its bitter-
sweet revelations about the ties that
bind possess a universal appeal that
extends far beyond the author's'
semi-:autobiographical experiences.
"Brighton Beach Memoirs speaks
to us all through one common thread
— family," says Mustakas, the show's
director. •
Brighton Beach Memoirs will con-
tinue to entertain audiences until
Aug. 10. .Eight performances are
presented weekly, Tuesday to
Saturday. Tickets can.be ordered by
