Health Canada encourages kids to get active
Health Canada has recently
produced new physical activity
guides for children and youth. The
guides proved clear guidelines on
how much and how often children
and you need to be physically active
to promote healthy growth and
development.
According to Mark Tremblay,
University of New Brunswick, the
percentage of overweight children
aged seven - 13 years has tripled in
boys to 35 per cent and doubled in
Thanks to two sizable donations in
recent weeks of $30,000 and
$29,308 from the municipalities of
North Huron and Huron-Kinloss
respectively the Wingham and
District Hospital Foundation has
reached the $1 million mark in its
fundraising target of $1.2 million.
The money is assisting in the
purchase of new diagnostic imaging
equipment which has replaced the
outdated x-ray machine.
"This is an important milestone in
our fundraising efforts. We are very
grateful to businesses, organizations,
and individuals who supported and
continue to support this ambitious
undertaking," according to
Foundation Chair Ross Davies of
Wingham
Judith Gaunt, the chair of the
Wingham and District Hospital
board says the new equipment is
enhancing the speed of treatment,
thus improving patient care. "It will
help us deliver full service at our
local hospital," adds Gaunt.
The board of the Wingham and
District Hospital Foundation is
currently making plans for a final
push toward its goal. During the
summer and into the fall the
foundation board will be contacting
potential givers in order to raise the
additional $200,000. "It is definitely
achievable," says Davies.
Meanwhile Roily Kaufman of
Wingham has retired from the
foundation board after nearly 30
years of combined service to the
hospital and foundation boards. He
is being replaced by Lisa Middleton
of Wingham. Middleton is a
professional fundraiser and has
worked for the Canadian Parks and
Wilderness Society, Canadian
Diabetes Association. The Kidney
Foundation of Canada, Sunnybrook
Hospital and the Toronto Symphony
Orchestra.

The new guides stress that by
combining three types of physical
activity - endurance, flexibility and
strength, children and youth will
achieve the best results.
