Huron/Bruce 1VIADD to host national vigil
It is with much enthusiasm and
great excitement, that the MADD
Huron/Bruce Chapter of Mothers
Against Drunk Driving accepts the
honour and privilege to host MADD
Canada's 2004 National Candlelight
Vigil of Remembrance and Hope
and Victims' Weekend.
The local MADD Huron/Bruce
Chapter services all of Huron
County and the southern area of
Bruce County. This will 'be the first
time this national event will be
hosted and held in a rural area
outside the Greater Toronto Area.
The local chapter will host guests
from across Canada for a weekend to
be held at the Oakwood Inn and
Resort in Grand Bend in 2004 on
April 23, 24, 25.
This weekend is an opportunity for
victims of impaired driving to share
experiences and learn from one
another while attending grief and
bereavement related workshops
facilitated by experienced
professionals in the field.
Most importantly, the Vigil
provides an opportunity to public.y
remember loved ones who have beer
killed in impaired driving crashes
and to pay tribute to loved ones who
have been injured and whose lives
In the short term, a $1,000
donation made recently by Ontario
Pork will help three chapters of the
Salvation Army in Perth County.
But in the long run, the charitable
contribution made up of proceeds
from food booth sales at this year's
Ontario Pork Congress, could also
help point the way for other agencies
to do the same across the pro-
vince.
In a brief presentation, Clare
Schlegel, chair of Ontario Pork,
made the goodwill gesture to Mark
Steven Glaab, family services
director with the Salvation Army,
Wednesday, July 17th in Stratford.
Three separate cheques, each worth
$333.33 were presented to Army
chapters in Listowel, St. Marys and
Stratford.
Schlegel acknowledged the
benefits of making the donation, and
of doing business in the Festival
The choir of Trivitt Memorial
Anglican Church in Exeter is
hosting their fourth annual choir
garden party on Saturday, Aug. 10.
The concert will feature a
ombined choir from Trivitt
Memorial, Hensall United Church,
and Precious Blood Church, as well
as local soloists and
instrumentalists. Special guest will
be the Trinity Bayfield church
choir.
Highlights will include Friedhelm
Hoffmann (choir director and tenor
soloist) performing Ave Maria and
Sure in the Shining Night, as well as
cabaret songs. Susan Graham,
soprano will join in a duet and
perform a number of solos. Ralph
Topp, will provide both organ and
piano accompaniment. Other items
on the program will include A
Schubert Lieder, an oboe solo and
much more.
The concert starts at 4:30 p.m. and
there will be a dinner, hosted by the
choir, immediately after the concert.
Dinner tickets are $7 and are
available for purchase at the door.
There is no admission charge to
have been forever changed.
The Candlelight Vigil is also a
time for MADD Canada to generate
public awareness about
victimization at the hands of
impaired drivers. MADD Canada's
mission is to stop impaired driving
and to support victims of this violent
crime. The Traffic Injury Research
Foundation notes that drunk drivers
kill an average of 4.5 people and
injure 125 people in Canada every
day.
'Reflections and Rays of Hope' is
the selected theme fcr the weekend.
A local artisan, Cheryl Campbell
from Huron County, donated her
services to sketch the artwork that
will be used in advertising and
keepsakes for the weekend.
Kelly Walker is the keynote
speaker for the weekend. Bruce
County was home to Walker in his
early years. He is a dynamic public
speaker, storyteller and gifted
musician, who will highlight the
victims' weekend.
Walker has offered to compose a
special 'music of hope' theme song
specifically for the MADD Canada
Victims' Weekend and Candlelight
Vigil 2004 weekend. He has
travelled extensively throughout
City where the Pork Congress is
held each year. "We benefit as being
part of the community and we're
appreciative of the opportunity to
continue to work with the Pork
Congress here in Stratford," said
Schlegel; who also farms in the
Tavistock area, nearby. "It's our
opportunity to give to a worthy
cause in the community."
At a time when Ontario farmers
are being hurt by a hot, dry summer
and unfair trading conditions south
of the border, such contributions are
important to help those who are less
fortunate in the community.
Glaab, although new to the
Stratford district, welcomed the
donation, noting the money will go
to various uses including the food
bank and family services. "It's the
generous donations like this on a
regular basis that allow us to
continue on," said Glaab. "(An
the concert, but a goodwill offering,
to support the work of the choir,
would be appreciated.
Canada and the United States to
encourage, entertain and contribute
to emotional healing in a
meaningful, uplifting and insightful
manner.
The support, ideas and suggestions
from the community-atT large will
help the local chapter host a
fabulous weekend featuring 'down-
home' hospitality with care and
compassion for victims of impaired
driving. MADD Huron/Bruce
invites community volunteers
including service clubs, OSAID
students and business professionals
to be a part of the planning and
organizing of this national event.
Interested, energetic individuals are
welcome and encouraged to contact
the local chapter to offer assistance
in their area of expertise.
Victims and non-victims of
impaired driving will work together.
Various committees will be set up to
co-ordinate the many areas of
planning. Skills and talents in
advertising, fundraising, clerical and
computer work, photography,
journalism, artistry in floral
arrangements and decorations,
gospel and spiritual music,
facilitating grief and bereavement
workshop sessions, transportation
amount like this) goes a long way."
Other agencies that have benefited
from similar donations of Ontario
Pork Congress proceeds in the past
five years include the Food Bank in
Mitchell and the House of Bessing
in Stratford. The 2002 Pork
Congress marked the return of the
annual industry showcase following
a year's absence due to fears over
the potential spread of hoof-and-
mouth disease to North America
from Europe.
