BUYING FOR A MINOR
IS A MAJOR OFFENCE
Supply alcohol to a minor and you're risking their
health and safety. You also risk up to one year in jail and up to $200,000
in fines. If you're old enough to buy alcohol legally, be responsible.
Be responsible. Don't buy for minors.
Hair today, gone to a good cause
Annamieka Kerkhof, left has wanted to shed her long locks
for some time. When she heard about. Hair For Kids in
Toronto, she made the decision to donate her ponytail. The
organization uses human hair to create wigs for children
who have lost their hair while undergoing treatment for
cancer. When Annamieka's friend Felicia Souch heard what
her friend was doing, she decided to give up the hair she'd
been saving since she got it cut two years ago. (Bonnie Gropp

Ah - the lazy, hazy., days of
summer are here. The rains caine.
the sun shone, the winds blew and
the humidity rose. Yes, we, tfave
summer.
Vacations continue as our folks
isit family, have visitors here and
travel to sights afar. Memories are in
the making as this time of relaxation
and renewal continues - hopefully to
you and yours- with people and
places of your choice.
Real estate is changing hands quite
quickly this year in Brussels, so
neighbourhoods will be adjusting

all the new owners.
When land ownership is the
subject of discussion you can tell
hoW long someone has lived in the
village by the name they associate
with the building. To some we live in
Selwyn Baker's house and I've been
sleeping here since the 1970s.
History lessons abound if the
discussion takes place in a group -
names like Conaboy, Bozyk,Evans,
McLaughlin were pulled into recent
conversation, all with good stories to
boot.
Final goodbyes were said last
week to our good. friend Ida Evans.
Her name was part of community
and deservedly one of the first
"Citizens of the Year". She was a
matriarch of the United Church and
part of the many initiatives that
improved our area. Ida was one of

thing hosts want is uninvited guests
in the form of crawling or biting
insects. Here are some facts about
common insects and tips to keep
them from crashing the party.
Flies
Flies lOve food and Always want to
help themselves, but .they lay their
eggs in decaying meat or fecal
matter and spread germs to food as
they land and 'taste' with their feet.
When flies are particularly
bothersome, a spray can be used
outdoors or in the home.
Ants
Ants are well-known as . picnic
pests. They are social insects that
live. in colonies, each led by at least
one queen. When a worker ant finds
food, thousands more usually follow
to collect rations for the colony,
following a chemical trail that the
first worker leaves behind.
• Since the only way to kill an ant
colony is to kill tht queen, ants can
only be treated effectively by using a

The United Church is on holiday-
for August and in celebration a toe-
tapping musical group The Saints
helped with worship last Sunday.
Our friends from Melville, as well
as visitors, shared worship through
music and lunch before Minister
Joan begins her much deserved
holiday. See you in September.

syStem approach that includes baits.
The worker ants gather poisoned
food from the bait and carry the
poison back to the colony and the
queen.
WaspS
Yellowjackets are the most
common wasp found in Canada and
can be a real nuisance, as they tend
to be persistent in crawling on food
and into beverage cans.
Treating the nest itself is the most
efficient method of wasp control and
should be attempted only at dusk or
after dark, when nearly all members
of the colony will have returned to
the nest and will be less likely to
leave.
To avoid attracting all insects,
keep your garbage and scraps (such
as corn cobs) well away from your
eating area, clean up -food spills
promptly and wipe jam or syrup
bottles clean on the outside.
