I had the unexpected pleasure of a
visit from Stanley Campbell. I did
not know him but he knew me.
Stanley lives in Apple Valley,
California and gets The Citizen sent
to him. He originates from
Cranbrook and told me he always
reads the Cranbrook News.
Stanley is 82 now and came to.
Atwood to attend the 50-year
anniversary of Jack and Jean
Valentine of Atwood. He wanted to
see me because he wanted to give
me some old bills that The Huron
Expositor sent him for advertising
the sale of his farm in 1956.
He told mg that opposite my house
in Cranbrook was a double-store
building where Claire Long ran a
store on the main floor and the
Foresters had a hall on the second
floor.
Stanley was horn on a farm just
south of Cranbrook and grew up
with friends like Graemc
MacDonald and his brother
Kenneth. He was on the hall hoard
when the hall was just built and
knew Lloyd Michael very well.
After the war. under the provisions
of the Veterans Land Act, he bought
the farm from Harry Keyes. 1 told
him the Wittig family now lives in
the house.
He regrets the development of the
huge farms in the area. He loved
farming in his day because it gave
him freedom to arrange his time,
even though he always had to be
home at certain times to take care of
cattle. Now large farming concerns
seem to make "a slave of it," he
says.
Stanley knew a lot about the
people and he said he misses euchre
parties. No one in California plays
euchre! lie will continue to read The
Citized and the Cranbrook
News.
Tanya and Steven Slater were
hosts to two pilgrims to the World
Youth Day to be held next week in
Toronto which will be attended by
the Pope. Michele Scotto D'Abusco
and Rosario Trani were their guests
and came to Canada from Ischia
near Naples.
The pilgrims arrived late on
Thursday and had a busy schedule in
Brussels. Wingham and Listowel.
cooling off at .the pool and being
entertained by the music group
Crossfire.
They departed Cranbrook early on
Monday and were headed to St.
Thomas before travelling to
Toronto. They will stay in Toronto
until they fly home next Monday,
July 29.
The Slaters cnjoyed their new
friends and hope to visit Italy some
day.
Jessica Bentley informed me that
July 22 was her birthday. I lappy
Birthday. Jessica!
The Weins held their annual
barbecue beef roast. It was attended
by many friends and neighbours in
Cranbrook and elsewhere. The food
was delicious and the company very
happy.
Maureen Duffy and Mary Ward
from Toronto visited Peter
Hagedoorn. Maureen makes the
.annual trip to Cranbrook and always
insists on going out at night to see
the starry skies.
This time Kathy Jo O'Grady and
Craig Lawrence served as the
knowledgeable guides to the
constellations and the stars.
Last Saturday this correspondent
went to the annual fun day picnic of
the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of
Ontario which was held in Canning
this year. Some 100 dogs and their
human companions attended.
My dogs may not have been the
best trained, but in my opinion they
were the most beautiful.

Celebrating the cup
Thousands of people lined the streets of Seaforth July 16
to cheer as hometown boy Boyd Devereaux and the
Stanley Cup were paraded down main street. Devereaux's
nephews, Conner and Kalen Devereaux, along with cup
keeper Mike Bolt rode in the firetruck bucket with the cup
while several lucky Seaforth and area children also had the
chance to ride on the truck. Hundreds of spectators waited
in line for the opportunity to see the cup up close or have a
picture taken with Devereaux. Many left disappointed when
the doors were closed at 4 p.m. (Janice Becker photo) ,
