Entertainment Theatre review Leisure `Filthy Rich' fun in a different way By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor And now for something complete- ly different. Filthy Rich, a uniquely entertain- ing play, written by acclaimed play- wright George F. Walker, opened at Blyth Festival on Thursday night. In the tradition of the classic film noire, Filthy Rich, one of Walker's first plays, in the capable hands of director Linda Moore, leads you from the seedy office home of retired crime journalist Tyrone F. Power, through a twisted, comic labyrinth of trails to keep the audi- ence simultaneously amused and bemused. In an interview in The Citizen's Blyth Festival salute, Artistic Director Anne Chislett admits that her pick for this season's Canadian Classic may not appeal to the Main- stream audience. "It's for the seg- ment of the audience who likes something different." said Chislett, adding that people who prefer plays that offer something new and excit- ing aren't generally the largest demographic for Blyth. However, Chislett felt that there was enough humour in the play for it to have a broader appeal than might be expected. And Filthy Rich is funny. Though some of the zingers are predictable they are delivered with such rapid- fire verve, the characters are on to the next one in a staccato beat. The hero, retired investigative crime reporter Power, lives in semi- squalor in his office. He writes occasionally for leisure magazines, while the past 15 years have been spent working on a novel. Enter the mysterious Anne Scott, whose presence begins the arrivals and departures of some interesting characters enroute to murder. There is Jamie, who delivers the death-in- the-family telegrams with extreme_ regularity to Power. As a struggling student he sees the stew of sub- terfuge and double-dealing cooking up around them as a recipe for instant wealth. The young man assigns himself to the reluctant Power as guardian angel and inves- tigative partner. Susan, Anne's sister, and Pig, thug who is romantically linked to one of the Scotts, get added to the mix, while police officer, Stackhouse, works the case. The intricate plot, told with all tongues firmly in cheek, is sharp and witty. The rhythm is fast, the dia- logue plentiful, with the exception of a rather drawn out opening scene. Leading a very talented cast through this maze of mystery and humour, is award-winning stage actor Randy Hughson. Jamie Robinson as Jamie makes a memo- rable return to the Blyth stage,.while it's always good to see Festival favourites Jerry Franken who appears as Stackhouse and Layne Coleman, who appeared to be hav- ing a blast as Pig. Suitably engaging as the sibling femme fatales are Birgitte Solem as Susan and Blyth newcomer Tracey Ferencz. The cast and story are compli- mented by Pat Flood's straightfor- ward set design, which is reminis- cent of 1940s detective LISTOWEL 291.3070 STARTS FRIDAY CINEMA I 7 & 9 P.M. PG MR. With its quirkiness, its gun shots, its sprinkling of bad language, Chislett may be right about Filth\ Rich's appeal. On the other hand, approach it with an open mind and a sense of fun and you could be in for a treat. Filthy Rich plays in repertoire until Aug. 10. Sample cordials, lemonade at Doon If you lived in 1914 rural Waterloo County, you couldn't just go to the refrigerator and open a cold can of pop to wet your whistle. So how did you quench your thirst before the days of mass-produced beverages? Visit Doon on July 28 and discov- er the types of beverages people drank to help them stay cool. Sample homemade lemonade and cordial and take home some recipes to try for yourself. ff ff ft 4Pf •40 °IP eds" 012 /2n glataf2 for N on and Kittie MacGregq7' TIP in honour of our fill 91 30th Anniversary !e August 3 'fp from 2-5 pm "• with the renewing of our .91 vows at 5 pm at our home folP ea tit 41410 Londesboro Rd. 0, Bring your lawn chair and a '7 NI salad if you WI Vh err we will NO NI be having ri bt 1138Q fe. after ill(' rats.
