Hebrews 12:I When I was growing up, summer vacations were often camping trips. A lake in northern Ontario was a favourite destination. One summer, we trucked Dad's__ aged Peterborough skiff to our campsite. The boat was put in the water and we children each had a turn at learning how to maneuver it. Rowing was not what 1 expected. The biggest surprise was that I had to face and focus on the point of land I was leaving in order to make my way to the opposite shore. To my mind this was a backward way of doing things. I tried going forward but that certainly did not work! Eventually, I did learn to navigate my way across the lake by rowing "backwards." Like paddling Dad's skiff. the Hebrew people looked back to the beginning of their history to understand who they were as a people of faith. The stories of Abraham and Sarah, Moses and Miriam, David. Ruth, Esther. Coffee Break hosts needed The Alzheimer Society of Huron County is preparing for its seventh annual Coffee Break to be held on National Coffee Break day, Sept. 19, The Society is currently seeking hosts who will organize Coffee Breaks in their homes. businesses, service club, or as part of their regular monthly meeting, prayer group or other social event. Coffee Break can be as elaborate or as simple as you wish to make it. Last year 96 Coffee Breaks were held throughout Huron County. Hosts welcomed friends and colleagues and raised more than $6,100. It is hoped to increase numbers this year. The goal is to have 150 Coffee Breaks, raising $10.000. Ninety per cent of money raised in Huron County stays right here to help the Alzheimer Society provide education and support for persons with Alzheimer disease, their families and caregivers. The remaining 10 per cent of money raised goes to research. For more information on how you can host a Coffee Break, please contact the Alzheimer Society of Huron County at 482-1482 or 1-, 800-561-5012. r, ▪ 10:30 a.m. - Contemporary Worship la g at Myth Public School, 3 corner of King & Mill • Pastor: Ernest Dow 523-4848 www.tcc.on.caf-dowfam 3 liworowoopmewmator Gideon, and Samuel, familiar stories, assured God's people that faith endures in spite of the curves lite throws. In the letter to the Hebrews. the author refers to those who had gone before as "a great cloud of witnesses.- Do we know who is in our cloud of witnesses'? Would we name some of our hymn writers - Susanna, John and Charles Wesley; theologians John Knox and Martin Luther; and others like Mother Theresa. Pope John XXIII, and Dr. Bob McClure? Along with Sarah and Abraham and the apostles, these people are in that cloud of witnesses, but there are others we should not forget. These are the people who pounded nails to build our churches; who raised money to keep the church open by baking pies, washing dishes and serving at church suppers; who taught Sunday School; who kept the church family in their daily prayers; who asked difficult questions that challenged us to review our understandings. They are also the ones who make it possible for us to "run the race that is set before us." Thanks be to God.
