M-T withdraws funding for imaging camera
By Janice Becker
Citizen staff
A piece of vital equipment for the
Blyth Fire Department may be oncce
again just a little more difficult to
pay for after one local municipality
decided recently not to donate
towards the purchase of a thermal
imaging camera.
Morris-Turnberry Reeve Keith
Johnston said that while all the
councillors agree the camera is a
good thing, there just wasn't money
for it.
"Our budget has gone up five per
cent. We had to find places to cut,"
he said.
Emphasizing council's
acknowledgment of the importance
of the item, Johnston_ added that it
may be something they could find
money for another year.
Blyth Fire Chief Paul Josling said
the movement to remove the camera
from the fire board's budget began
when both Central Huron and
Morris-Turnberry councils refused
to pass the budget with the camera
included.
Central Huron suggested
voluntary donations instead of a
levied sum. That council agreed to
contribute $3,000 towards the
$22,000 (before taxes) price tag.
Josling said the thermal imaging
camera is an extremely important
addition to the department's rescue
arsenal.
The camera works like a night-
vision camera, allowing the
firefighters to see hot spots in
smoke-filled and dark locations. It
can be used to locate people trapped
in fires, children hiding under beds

East
On July 8 just before 1:15 a.m.
OPP were called to a residence on
Division Line in McKillop over a
theft.
Sometime in the last day, while
the owner was away, someone
entered the property and stole a
1999 GMC black pickup truck from
the laneway. The truck has an
aluminum box built into the back
that contained some tools and
clothes. The truck has Ontario
plates #602-3HK and is valued at
$22,000.
Anyone who can help solve this is
asked to call the local OPP or Crime
Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS).
Medical mystery

or in closets as well as provide the
firefighters the added benefit of
surveying walls for potential
collapse and floors for holes.
"When you are disoriented, even
in a room you might be familiar
with, it can take three to four
minutes to locate a closet and search
the room," said Josling. "The camera
allows firefighters to scan the room
in 10 seconds. In a fire, those
seconds are critical."
Josling stated cases where the hot
spots of children's bodies had been

"Recently the Hamilton
department used its camera at a car
accident where they were unsure if
there had been more than one person

a girl who had been thrown 150 feet

Another use would be for

Josling said that with $13,500
already raised through the board's
fundraising efforts, the camera has
been ordered and the campaign to
acquire the monies will continue.

Municipalities covered by the

The board is looking into the
possibility of issuing tax receipts for
