North Huron 4-H sheep club holds organizational meeting By Keshia Bishop On April 30 the North Huron 4-H Sheep Club held its organizational meeting. Leaders, Marg Cunningham and Bethany Jensen handed out books and got information needed in order to take the club, while youth leader. Rebecca Bruton explained to all new members how 4-H works. Executive positions are as follows: Rebecca Bruton, president, Margaret Vincent, vice-president, Lindsay Watson, secretary, and Keshia Bishop, press reporter. On May 7 members discussed several different types of breeds of sheep including Southdown. Coriedale and Suffolk. On June 3 the meeting was at Shayrina Sheep Farm. A demonstration was put on by the staff. A running commentary was given about each breed of sheep. - Next, members judged apples and market lambs. They discussed diseases that sheep can get, and how to prevent them. Hypothermia, constipation and pinning are only a few of the diseases discussed. On July 3 a vet talked to them about different diseases that sheep get, and what kind of medication to give them. He talked about where the best places are to needle a sheep, different types of medication and gave a demonstration on how to trim the sheep's toenails. Afterwards, members got into groups of three and had a contest, chasing sheep through a runway and sorting them into two different groups. It was interesting watching other 4-Hers run around the pen chasing sheep. They then got a chance to try trimming a sheep's hooves.
