PAGE 11. - By Janice Becker Citizen staff When many people think of tug- of-war participants, burly, brawny men probably come to mind. However, for a group of 11 young women from all over Huron County, stature is hardly an indication of success. Kelly Clark, a Blyth business owner, could be described as petite, but, as a member of the women's Bluewater Tug of War team, her fitness, technique and the team's strategy are key to winning. Only a puller since November. along with Cheryl Thompson of Auburn. Clark and her teammates from across Huron County. are not only gearing up for a season of North American competitions, but are planning for a trip to South Africa in September to represent this country in the World Championship Games. While the Dashwood-based team qualified for the Worlds two years ago, Clark says just four of the current 11 member (only eight pull at one time) were part of that contingent. The Bluewater Tug of War women will battle in the 520 kg. class, the lightest category. However, their experience in provincial contests where there are no weight classifications, should stand them in good stead. Here, they often pull against 600 kg. Squads. In Barrie and Embro pulls this year, the team finished second both times. "Our coach, Jim Connolly of London, says we are The lightest team he has coached and we have also pulled the most weight," says Clark. -To enable the team to attend the Worlds, Clark says considerable fundraising is being undertaken. The very unusual task of roofing houses is one of the tasks they do to raise funds. Also on July 25, a tribute to the Blues Brothers concert at Clinton Slots will benefit the squad. When asked what enticed her to participate in a less-than conventional sport, Clark says it was the teamwork that is required. "No individual stands out. Everyone has to work together or it loosens the whole team. It is also a great workout." Clark points out that it is strength in the legs and stomach which is most used, not the arms. With the right strategy, "we can just hold the other team until they tire out," she smiles. All together The Bluewater ladies tug-of-war team had a little practice on Saturday when they appeared at Clinton's Pluckin' Fest to take on challengers. The womens and mens teams will both be travelling to South Africa this September to compete in the world championships. Kelly Clark, a Blyth business owner, second from left, is amongst the pullers who will be travelling south. (Vicky Bremner photo) While most of the members on the Bluewater squad are between 18 and 32, Clark says there is no age restriction, just fitness, _ Though the women pullers have only been a formal group since 1997, there is a history dating back to the 1950s for the men of the Dashwood area. The Bluewater Tug of War men's team is also going to South Africa to compete in the 720 kg. division. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Bluewater Tug of War teams can check out the website at www.tug-of-war.net.
