Lockridge may be sold
By Mark Nonkes
Wingham Adl'allCe Times
A hid to purchase the Lockridge
Memorial Arena has been made by
Howick Homes. According to
George OrioId, one of the owners of
Howick Homes, the arena will be
used for a bit of pre-fabricated
housing for the first little while.
"Eventually I'd like to find a better
use for it," OnoId said. "The
intention is to find the best use for
the building,"
At the North Huron council

The Wingham landfill site is
hoping to stay right where it is.
According to a report by Art Clark
presented to North Huron Twp.
council July 2, the landfill site will
stay open for many years to come.
"We're going to keep doing what
we've done in that site," Clark said.
The Wingham dump was given
until the end of 2002 to come up
with a plan for waste disposal in
accordance with the Ministry of
Environment's protection act.
In order to get the approval for
long-term use of the site North
Huron had to create an
environmental protection act
application.
Under the plan council purchased
the the land and 100 acres
surrounding it.
meeting last Tuesday, July 2,
councillors discussed giving the
arena a temporary zoning change.
North Clerk-Administrator John
Stewart reported at a public meeting,
where the neighbours of the arena
and the potential buyers met, concern
was expressed about construction
noise and a higher volume of traffic.
Council discussed granting the
company a year-long temporary
zoning change for the arena. That
way residents would get a chance to
see what having the company in the
neighbourhood was like.
The plan also outlines where the
garbage will be placed. Clark said
new garbage will be piled on top of
existing waste to create a hill.
The dump will also plant more
trees along its edge.
Councillor Jeff Howson asked
Clark if the Blyth dump was closed
would the Wingham landfill site be
able to handle that excess waste.
Clark said that the application had
been set up to take into account that
garbage as it is a North Huron site.
"You're just full of good news,"
said Blyth ward Councillor Murray
Nesbitt.
Clark responded by saying that he
also had some bad news too. The fee
for the applications was $22,700.
That was set by the ministry and
could not be changed.
Council then voted and gave
unanimous support on sending the
application.
"This way is kind of a fix that will
please both parties," Reeve Doug
Layton said.
"The residents are looking at the
worst possible things," Councillor
Murray Nesbitt added.
However, COuncillor Jeff Howson
said that granting a temporary
licence might discourage businesses
from opening in Wingham. "There
arc other municipalities begging for
business." Howson said. Howson
said that a temporary licence has no
security if it (the council) was able to
pull the plug on the company after
one year. "If we arc going to sit here
as a council and say no...then we're
wasting our time," Howson said.
Council will vote on the options
presented at the next council
meeting, July 15.
OPP investigate
break-in
at feed store
On July 5 at 8:15 a.m. OPP were
called to a break-in at Snell Feed and
Supply located on Westfield Road in
East Wawanosh Twp.
Officers discovered that sometime
during the night a door to the
structure was forced open to the
business and some cash was stolen.
Also, Doug Snell Auto Repair,
which adjoins the mill, was also
entered. This time keys left inside on
a desk were taken and a customer's
vehicle a 1984 C-l0 pickup truck
red/grey in colour having Ontario
plates #EY9863 was stolen from the
parking lot.
Anyone who can solve this crime
is asked to call the local OPP or
Crime Stoppers.
