The Bluewater Kennel Club will be staging the twentieth edition of its annual dog show and trials in Blyth once again this year.
The show was first held in 1982 and is part of a summer circuit of shows which start in Sarnia and move on to Woodstock after
its appearance in Blyth.
The traditional configuration show features dogs of numerous different breeds. Each animal is judged on how well it conforms
to a breed's 'ideal' size, shape and appearance.
Dogs and their handlers parade around the ring while watched by the judge who will assess a dog's movement and general
appearance. The same judge then examines a dog closely as it stands in place to see if it conforms to the rules for that breed.
Dogs are awarded trophies as best in breed and a further award is made to the dog
which is judged to be the best in the show.
As always the obedience trials will be held in three categories, recognizing a dog's
level of training. The novice division features animals that are beginning their training
and they are asked to obey simple commands such as sit and stay.
The open class demands more as commands become more complicated. Dogs are
expected to have the discipline to obey stay commands even when the handler leaves
the ring.
The top category in obedience trials is called the utility class and requires more than
simple obedience from the dogs. In this class they are asked to perform tasks such as
identifying their handler's scent on a toy.
The show will feature an agility competition for the second time. This crowd-
pleasing competition demonstrates a dog's ability to navigate their way through an
obstacle course as quickly as possible. Many different breeds are able to compete on an
equal basis as various parts of the course are suited to different sizes and shapes of
animal.
The three day show is an ideal opportunity for the general public to get out and have
a look at the best of their favourite breed.
