THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 2002. PAGE 23.
Congregations bid farewell to Rev.
In a joint service on Sunday, June
30, the congregations of Londesboro
and Auburn United Churches and
Rev. Paul Ross said their goodbyes.
On a warm day in June, the occasion
was full of warm wishes.
Since announcing his intention to
leave the Londesboro charge Rev.
Ross emphasized that he has felt the
winds of God blowing himself and
the Londesboro charge in new
directions.
The hymn I Feel the Winds of God
Today was one used in this final
service along with many others
which echoed that theme.
Gail Lear and Barb Bosnian
accompanied the hymn-sing, at the
beginning of the service, on the
piano and organ. The senior choir
sang a medley, The Wonderful Songs
of Grace.
Later in the service, a quartet of
1-larry and Gail Lear, Barb Bosman
and Brenda Radford offered Just a
Little Talk With Jesus. During the
receiving of the offering, Paul Ross
and Barb Bosman played a
flute/piano duet, The Rose.
Hand puppet, Charlie Horse, made
an appearance during the children's
time. He brought with him a picture.
In the picture, Jesus, as the pilot
stands behind a young man manning
the wheel of a boat. Charlie
explained that the pilot on a boat
tells the helmsman how to navigate
the journey.
Rev. Ross wished the children to
remember that Jesus is the pilot who
stands with everyone to guide them
through life.
The Old Testament scripture
passage, I Samuel 9: 5-10 tells the
story of Saul and a companion
searching for lost donkeys. After
some time, Saul is ready to give up.
However his companion suggests
they enter the next town and talk
about their search with a man of God
there.
Rev. Ross reflected on how for the
past 12 years he has been honoured
to be a man of God for the
Londesboro and Auburn
congregations. He thanked
churchgoers for their confidence and
faith in his ability to guide them and
to keep them on the trail or walking
in God's way.
Two powerful verses, Matthew 7:
13-14 were the basis for Rev. Ross
second reflection. In those verses,
Jesus, whose message never
changed, explained that His
followers must walk a very thin line
to be allowed into heaven.
Rev. Ross pointed out that
Christians have tools to help them
stay on the trail such as attending
worship regularly and being part of a
community of faith. He also feels
God brings people together when He
recognizes a need.
Paul and the congregation must
trust that God's winds are blowing
them in the right directions and
treasure the memories of their time
together.
At the conclusion of the service on
behalf of the Londesboro
congregation, Nick Whyte presented
Paul and Ruth with a farewell gift —
a numbered print of a photo by
Paul's friend Richard Bain entitled
Home from Church. Cheryl
Trewartha for the Londesboro UCW
presented the Rosses with a garden
figurine.
Harry Lear has also decided it is
time for change and to turn over his
church secretarial duties. To thank
Harry for his dedication to the
Londesboro congregation, Barb
Bosman, on behalf of the official
board presented him with a Galileo
thermometer.
The new church secretary is
Harriett Shillinglaw. She will be in
the office at the manse on most
Tuesday and Friday mornings and
can be reached at 523-4477.
There will be no services at
Londesboro United Church for the
month of July.
Flowers at the front of the
sanctuary were placed by the
members of Ted Fothergill's family
to whom is expressed sincerest
sympathy.

Dennis and Kevin spent several
hours on Father's Day with their
dad. Ted Fothergill. Although they
were aware Ted had recently been
diagnosed with cancer, they were
really not prepared for his passing
the following Saturday, June 22.
Born in Westfield, Ted and his late
wife, June, spent their married life in
Londesboro where they raised four
children, Dennis, Heather, Nancy
and Kevin. No longer able to
manage on his own, Ted moved to
the Seaforth Manor in late win-
ter.
With the outbreak of World War II
Ted enlisted and sailed for England
aboard the original Queen Elizabeth.
As a member of the army ambulan-ce
corps, Ted was responsible for
bringing the wounded and the
casualties off the battlefield.
Being on the front lines as he was
in France, Belgium and Germany,
Hullett Happenings
Although pupils from Hullett
Central Public School were
dismissed for the summer last
Wednesday, there are some end-of-
the-year items to share with you.
Each of the pupils at Hullett this
year received a great keepsake along
with their report card, a yearbook.
The students _ responsible for
assembling this record were Jaleena
Daw, Sara Moore, Megan Disher,
' Katherine Greidanus and Andrea
Sturzenegger.
On June 12, six athletes from
Hullett attended the Avon Maitland
District track and field. meet held in
Mitchell and all competed well.
Brad Greidanus placed third in the
high jump while Jeffrey Gibson
Ted had more than one close call
himself. Perhaps it was the terrible
conditions of war that caused Ted to
be most comfortable in slippers in
recent years.
Following the service, Ted, as did
a few others from this area, found
work in Niagara Falls at the
Cyanamid Plant for a time. When he
returned to Huron county in 1951,
Ted was a civilian custodian,
groundskeeper, etc. at the Clinton
Air Base until it closed.
Villagers could probably have set
their clocks by Ted's walking to and
from work at the Londesboro Seed
Cleaning Plant — his last place of
employment
As the work at the plant slowed
seasonally and in later years, Ted
still faithfully tended the plant's
resident cats.
A member of the Londesboro
Happy Gang Seniors, Ted and June
did go on a few bus trips sponsored
by the Seniors. They also supported
a great many of the area's
fundraising dinners.
The horrors he saw overseas may
be the reason Ted felt life should be
lived at a simpler, slower pace. The
inside front door of Ted and June's
home was open in all but the worst
of weather conditions. His favourite
front room chair afforded him a view
of the world through that door.
came in third in the 100-metre
race.
The student/teacher ratio at
Hullett remains the same for the next
school year. Moreover, all of this
year's staff will be returning on
Sept. 3 which will be comforting for
the pupils.
With the ending of the school year
comes the retirement of Hullett Bus
Lines. After many years of
transporting pupils over the back
roads of Hullett Twp. and on many
bus trips farther afield, Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Buffinga have turned the keys
over to Murphy Bus Lines.
All current drivers, however, will
be back behind the wheel. come
September.
