Certified
Some 22 people led by Bruce Shillinglaw, took a steam traction operator's certification course
and exam at Bill Andrews' shop in Auburn last week. The final three-and-a-half hour exam was
Thursday administered by the chief boiler inspector. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Steam operators take test
The Ontario Federation of All
Terrain Vehicle Clubs (OFATV)
urges everyone to consider safety
first when riding this summer.
To help support this goal the Perth
and District ATV Club Inc. has
arranged a safety, education and
awareness, open house at the
Wescast Community Centre in
Wingham on Saturday, July 8.
The event will feature a Canadian
Safety Council approved instructor
talking about safe riding. There will
be educational workshops,
information on ATV maintenance
and new product information.
The event will run from 10 a.m.
until 8 p.m. on the Saturday and the
public is welcome.
For more information the public
can call 519-357-4320. Email
inquires can be made at
info@ perthdistrictatv.ca or
bradbury@wightman.ca.
Twenty-two steam engine owners
and operators from as far away as
Owen Sound and St. Marys were at
Bill Andrews' shop in Auburn from
June 17 - 20 participating in a
instructional training course run by
Bruce Shillinglaw of Londesboro.
The course was similar to others
being held in other Ontario towns -
St. Thomas, New Liskeard,
Hamilton and Lindsay. The reason
for the course was that steam
traction engine operators need to
have an operator's certificate now to
operate their engine at public shows
or fairs.
To obtain an operating certificate,
the operator needs to pass an
Ontario Government exam and have
at least 160 hours of practice
experience on a certified steam
traction plant or railway loco-
motive.
