Hullett squad starts well
start with five runs, while shutting
down the home side in their half of
the first inning.
Hullett came alive in the second
with five runs in the bottom.
Unfortunately, seven runs had scored
itt_the top.
Staffa seemed to lose steam from
here on in, however, scoring just two
in the third and none in the fourth,
while Hullett just got stronger. Four
hometown players crossed the plate
in the third while six scored in the
final inning for the narrow win.
Sharing duties on the mound were
Derek Dolmage and Cook.
June 19 saw a romp over the
hometown Brussels team: The
Hullett squad came up with 28 runs
over five innings, while Brussels
managed 12. The visitors' onslaught
was highlighted by grand slams from
Anthony Wilts and Jon Merner. Also
hitting homers for Hullett were Terry
The Blyth Mosquito Thunder
soccer squad weren't exactly
gracious hosts when they played the
Clinton Cougars last Thursday night.
It was a home team whitewash.
Coach Alan Young said, "It was an
excellent effort by all team players
with strong defence to help the
goaltenders. All players came to
Tuesday, June 18 the Wingham
Bantam Outlaws lacrosse team
travelled to Clifford.
Minto scored the first two goals of
the game in less than five minutes.
Cory Chapman ran the length of the
floor to score the only Wingham
goal in the first period. Minto
answered with a third goal with less
than four minutes left in the period.
Chapman scored the only point in
the second period on a pass from
Chase Chapman.
Scoring picked up in the third
period. Minto scored first only
seconds into the period. Xavier
O'Krafta received a pass from Cory
Chapman to get Wingham back in
the running. Minto however, scored
again to stretch the lead by two.
Brussels
With summer in full swing it's
been busy at Brussels soccer
fields.
On June 11, the Brussels U-7 I
squad booted its way to a'4-1 victory
over Elma II.
Then on June 18, the squad took
on Howick I and defeated the
visitors 6-3.
Also on June 11 was a replayed
game between Brussels U-13 I and
Elma I. This resulted in the visitors
play."
In net for most of the game was
Regal Good. Darcy Young also took
a turn between the pipes.
Scoring on a penalty shot for
Blyth was Anthony Peters. Other
goals came from Gordon Brigham,
Kendall Whitfield and Ben
Caldwell.
Chase Chapman's persistence in
front of the net paid off and
Wingham was only one behind the
home team.
Dickie Gregg netted his first goal
of the season on a pass from
O'Krafta to get the tying goal. Cory
Chapman scored his third of the
game to get the go-ahead goal.
Unfortunately, for the Wingham
team, Minto scored a tying goal with
only 10 seconds left to end the game
at 6/6.
The Wingham team played with
help from four PeeWee boys after
they had already played on their own
team right before.
The next game is on Wednesday,
June 26 in Wingham against
Guelph.

edging the hosts 3-2.
On June 10, the U-15 Is hosted
Listowel II. The visitors took this
one in a big way, with a final score
of 7-1.
June 13, Newton's U-17s blew
into town and blew away the
competition. The final score was
Newton, seven, Brussels I. two.
On June 17 the Brussels U-9 I
squad kicked to a 2-2 tie against
Newton II.
The Hullett PeeWee Boys baseball
team got off to a great start with a
15-8 trouncing of Sebringville, June
4.
Darcy Cook went all the way on
the mound, striking out five through
five innings.
After a scoreless first inning, the
visitors brought home five to take a
huge lead in the top of the second.
Hullett answered with one in their
half.
Sebringville added one to their
lead then held Hullett down in the
third, but the tables turned in the
fourth with the visitors bringing in
one run, and Hullett having seven
cross the plate.
A replay of that inning in the fifth
gave the hosts a solid win.
The next game, June 18 was close,
but Hullett managed to steal it 15-14
from Staffa.
Again the visitors got off to a good
After a rain-shortened game
against Howick June 11, the
Brussels U-11 soccer team
challenged Newton 3 on home turf,
June 18.
The teams were very well matched
with the squads alternately
dominating and both having
numerous chances on net.
Randy Zwep, Gavin Bowers, and
Felicia Souch worked hard in the
first half, keeping the ball in their
opponents' end for a considerable
amount of time. Elli Schimanski
helped by working the sidelines.
Thomas Johnston and Andrew._
Lindsay also kept pressure on the
opposition's netminder. Cam
Schlosser and Chris Becker's
defense aided goalie David
Grobbink.
Zwep notched his first goal of the
season when he took a skit from a
sharp angle on the left side and lifted
the ball over the head of the
goalkeep. Lindsay followed with an
excellent rush after the face-off at
centre, but was thwarted by strong
net minding.
Newton tied the match then kept
the pressure on, forcing Grobbink to
make a diving save at the goal line.
Matthew Cardiff, Nick Durrell and
Schlosser's defensive play late in the
first half helped keep the opponents
at bay and a clearing shot opened up
a chance for Kelby Krotz while
Heather Hill worked along the
perimeter and Emily Warwick
patrolled centretield to control the
movement of the ball.
Lindsay put Brussels back into the
lead in the second, taking the ball
from his, own end and maneuverkig
his way through numerous defenders
for the score. On a strong rush by the
visitors, Becker assisted Grobbink in
net, kicking the ball to safety when it
squirted behind the goalie.
Annamieka Kerkhof guarded the
centre line, keeping Newton out.
Newton went up 3-2 after tallying
two quick netters, the first when the
ball dribbled over the line and the
second on a solo effort.
Lindsay got his second of the
night, picking up his own rebound at
the side of the net.
The opponents went ahead just
minutes later when an attacker got
through the defenders and volleyed
Wingham plays Minto
the ball high into the netting.
The dying minutes were exciting
as Brussels tried repeatedly to even
the score with a continuous effort by
Johnston to keep the ball in the
Newton end and offensive play by
Souch, Kerkhof, Hill, Bowers and
Lindsay.
Robert Cronin, Vanessa Ropp,
Denise Thalen and Josh Thalen also
exhibited strong play.
Brussels never gave up, attacking
until the final whistle, settling for the
4-3 loss.
