irst report to council
By David Blaney
Citizen staff
Bonnie LaFontaine, Huron East's
business development officer made
her first presentation to council at the
June 18 meeting. Much of her
presentation was an update on her
first few weeks on the job.
LaFontaine reported that she had
met with most of the business- related
groups in the area. She said she had
spent considerable time during the
past five weeks introducing herself
to local businesspeople with the help
of councillors and others.
Lafontaine stressed again, as she
did when originally introduced to
council, that she wanted her work to
benefit all of Huron East.
She commented that she was
currently working with the Huron
County planning department to- get
accurate and up-to-date-land use maps
of Huron East. These maps are useful
when developers are trying to
determine where a new business
might be located.
The Huron East website is still
scheduled for, a fall launch even
though development is currently on
hold. LaFontaine said that she wanted
more time to consult with the
stakeholders to determine what would
best suit their needs.
One aspect of LaFontaine's
presentation did seem . to catch
councillors offguard. She suggested
that all councillors and staff be
required to sign an oath" of
confidentiality.
In explaination LaFontaine said, "I
was truly upset, not that council
received my resume but that it was
available to anyone who asked. I saw
information in my paper that I
did not wish to share with the public."
Deputy-Mayor Bernie MacLellan
commented that they sometimes
require in camera sessions but that "I
don't like it even if I understand the
reasons." He went on to say, "I would
hope you are not bringing
confidential matters to council."
Later Mayor Lin Sterner suggested
that she understood that councillors
were already bound by the oath of
office which they took when sworn
in. However, she went on to say,
"Personally 1 don't see a problem -
with it. It is our duty to keep things
confidential during business dealings
with people who might be thinking of
locating in town.
She suggested that this was not
unusual both because of possible
reprocussions in the area in which the
company was currently located and
because of the nature of much of the
discussions.
