Over 19,000 Avon Maitland students ,will soon be leaving for their summer vacations. Along with them 89 teachers and principals will be saying goodbye to the system. The Avon Maitland District School Board honoured retiring staff on June 18 at a reception held at the Seaforth and District Community Centre. The reception was to By Stew Slater Special to The Citizen Student trustees of the Avon Maitland District School Board now have the right to cast a vote on issues of concern to students. That vote, however, will not be binding. At a regular meeting Tuesday, June 11, voting trustees unanimously supported a series of policy changes brought forward from the Students' Advisory Committee, which comprises student trustees from each of the board's 10 secondary schools, along with west/south Perth trustee Carol Bennewies and representatives from administration. Students from each school choose their representative through their own process, and that student trustee is expected to report back to the student body about activities of the board. According to Ontario's Education Act, school boards must allow at least one student trustee to sit in on all regular meetings, though they're not allowed to vote. Unlike many boards, Avon Maitland welcomes two student trustees to the table and, following the June 11 meeting, will now also allow them a reduced form of voting rights. The June 11 changes all involved Board Policy No. 04, entitled "Students' Advisory Committee and Student Trustees (Pupil By Stew Slater Special to The Citizen The mother who successfully spearheaded the fight to have Holmesville Public School removed from the Avon Maitland District School Board's most recent list of school closure possibilities is now urging parents from across Huron and Perth Counties to join forces. Shelley Kaastra addressed the board through a public delegation at a regular meeting Tuesday, June 11. She informed them of the formation of Parents' Voice of Avon Maitland, with herself and Stratford resident Elaine McLaren as co-chairs. - "We hope to ensure that parents can have meaningful input into our children's education," Kaastra explained, adding that the group might be seen as the "silver lining" that arose from the "cloud" of potential and real school closures. Kaastra said the group will ask parents and other community members to compose hand-written letters expressing the educational needs of children which aren't being met by the Ontario government's current funding formula. These letters will be forwarded to Education Minister Elizabeth Witmer. She also said the group recognizes the strong possibility that further school closures will still occur in the Avon Maitland board. She cited comments to that effect made by recognize the years of service given by staff who retired during the 2001- 2002 school year. The local area has several educators retiring this year from both the elementary and secondary levels. Vice-principal Barbara Hood of Listowel District Secondary School has left, as have teachers Carol Representation on Boards)." Among the changes were a clarification about the number of student trustees necessary to achieve quorum at Advisory Committee meetings, and a broadening of the opportunity for each student trustee to take turns participating in regular board meetings. But the most significant change, in terms of the operation of the full Avon Maitland board, was the granting to student trustees of non- binding voting rights at the regular board table. "Basically, it will be our little opinion that we're expressing on the board, on issues that affect students," explained Mitchell District High School representative John Nater, who occupied one of the student trustee seats at the June 11 meeting, and has been the most frequent student attendee at the meetings all year. Nater added that student trustees will only vote if it has already been determined that a majority of the students on the Advisory Committee agree. In an interview following the meeting, Nater explained that student trustees of the Greater Essex District School Board can already cast a non-binding vote on issues affecting students. He said that formed part of the impetus for suggesting the change. Director of Education Lorne Stratford trustee Meg Westley in February. At the time, Westley surprised many by voting against Holmesville's closure, but she also warned that further examination and possible closure within the entire Goderich-area cluster of schools is still likely. At that same February meeting, Kaastra. pledged to find ways of bringing together community and parent groups from across the region, to work together with the board and fight for changes in the funding formula. Following Kaastra's June 11 delegation, Westley praised her efforts. She related to Kaastra news of a recent demonstration by the province-wide group People For Education. Westley said representatives of that group gathered at Toronto's Queen's Park carrying magnifying glasses, supposedly looking for, the educational task force that was announced many weeks ago by Premier Ernie Eves in his inaugural Throne Speech, but has not yet conducted meaningful discussions. Oriold, C. Kitty Poelstra from that school. F. E. Madill has lost Mary Henry, a vice-principal, and teachers Larry Lane, Carolyn Schofield and Edward Brewster. _ Central Huron Secondary School has lost four familiar faces as Alan Beattie, William Fink, Richard Hillier and Allan Mullin have retired. Goderich Collegiate Institute Rachlis praised this year's student trustees for examining their role and working to achieve their goals. will also have said goodbye to three teachers as Robert Dick, Linda Donnelly and Christine Ritchie will not be returning for the next year. Seaforth Public School is bidding fairwell to vice-principal David Bonner and teachers, Roy Gingerich, Carol Henderson, Allan Lutgendorf and William Reid. East Wawanosh Central Elementary School is losing three teachers to retirement — Cheryl Hesse's, Karen Webster and Jane Wilson. Mary Buffinga will be leaving Blyth Public School. Principal Paul Dyck and teacher Karen Uhler will not be returning to Brussels for another year and Laura Scott has retired from Grey Central Elementary School. Judy Morton of the Belgrave area and Patricia Barnes of the Brussels area are also retiring from the board. Larry and Peter Snell, formerly of the Londesboro area have also said goodbye to their schools. According to Steve Howe, a spokesman for the board, slightly fewer principals and teachers are retiring this year than last. The 2000 - 2001 years saw 109 staff members taking their leave.
