Brussels Livestock report
Calves trade $5 higher at Friday's sale
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending June
14 were 1.917 head of cattle. 800
lambs and goats.
On Tuesday the fed steers and
heifers traded on a steady market.
The cows also sold steady. On
Thursday the veal and lambs sold on
a steady market. On Friday the calves
traded $5 higher and the yearlings
sold at prices $2 to $3 higher than last
week's trade.
There were 458 steers on offer
selling from $100 to $103 with sales
to $115.50. One blonde steer
consigned by Schmidt Brook Farms
Inc.. Woodstock, weighed 1.305 lbs.
selling to Dominion Meats for
$115.50. Their overall consignment
of eleven steers averaged 1,503 lbs.
selling for an average of $101.96. D.

weighing 1,390 lbs. which sold for

Packing Co. Inc. for $91.50. One
holstein cow consigned by Mathias
Kunzle, Staffa, weighed 1,135 lbs.
and sold for $89. Groenberg Farms,
Lucknow, consigned one holstein
cow weighing 1,055 lbs. which sold
for $85.
There were 16 bulls on offer selling
from $57 to $86.50 with sales to $95.
Rudy Gingerich, Wingham,
consigned one simmental bull
weighing 1,840 lbs. which sold for
$86.50. One blonde bull consigned
by Ian Robertson. Tara, weighed
2.400 lbs. which sold to Levinoff
Meat Products for $86.50.
There were 179 head of veal on
offer. Beef sold $106 to $130;
Holstein, $83 to $93 with sales to
$103; Plain Holstein, $70 to $77. One
simmental heifer consigned by
George Ducharme, Dashwood,
weighed 640 lbs. selling for $130.
This summer the EFAO, The
Ecological Farmers Association of
Ontario,. the largest organic
agriculture organization in the
province, is hosting farm tours at
several members' farms that allow
fellow farmers, consumers,
educators, and families to see it up
close, in the barn and in the field.
The tours kick off with a double
billing Saturday, July 13, with tours
northeast of Guelph and southeast of
Strathroy. Children are welcome, but
no pets. Be prepared to walk in the
sun or rain.
In southwestern Ontario, southeast
Strathroy, the tour is at the farm of
Bill Lamont, who has cash crops and
rotationally grazed beef. The tour
begins at 9 a.m. with the field crops
and after a break for lunch (bring
your own brown bag) the farm tour
recommences at 1 p.m. The organic
field crops include spelt, soybeans,
transitional corn, oats, and organic.

Farm, .part of the Everdale Learning

The tour will include the farm and
learning facilities, solar power
installations, straw bale cabins and
discussions of farm apprenticeship,
CSA vegetables selling model and
how the farm and learning centre
compliment each other.
On Saturday, July 20, there is a
farm tour at the certified organic
farm of Bob, Carol and Martin
Passmore, who raise beef and direct
market all of it themselves. Along
with the cows and calves you will
see their pasture management
system and oat, barley, corn and hay

p.m.
On Sunday, July 28, there is a tour
at Tony and Fran McQuail's farm
near Lucknow. This long established
100-acre certified organic farm
markets meats and vegetables direct
to the consumer. The tour starts at 1

voluntary- not-for-profit association
that educates people about organic
methods of farming. They have a
