THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE -12, 2002. Theatre review A loverly 'Fair Lady' at Stratford n. Colm Feore and Cynthia Dale appear in Stratford Festival's production of the musical My Fair Lady. (Courtesy photo) By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor Stratford Festival's My Fair Lady is, well, loverly. The musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, stars Colm Feore and Cynthia Dale, and is directed by Richard Monette. Continued from page 21 Gaetan Blanchette, before stating the provincial education act requires a special resolution in such circum- stances. Without such a motion, the trustee would have to be replaced. Chair Mike Miller noted all board Based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, My Fair Lady has the phonetically charged, socially chal- lenged Professor Henry Higgins take on Cockney flowergirl Eliza Doolittle as a project. When he and his fellow linguist Colonel Pickering discover her one evening in Covent Gardens, Higgins boasts of how he members are keeping McInnes in their prayers during his recuperation. But Miller also hinted at the value to the board of the long-serving trustee by adding, "and hopefully he's pray- ing for us as well, as we' arry on in his absence." could turn her into a lady. Six months later, he has done just that, leaving Eliza uncertain about her place in society, and Higgins confused about his feelings. Feore, as the first of three who will play the part of Higgins in the Festival's production, plays the ever proper misogynist, with a bit of the rogue to him, almost as if he knows his flaws but is amused by them. His charm manages to soothe the sting of his caustic comments. Dale brings yet another endearing heroine to life with her performance of Doolittle. Apparently ageless, Dale bedazzles as she takes the flow- ergirl through her transformation. And the two together manage to stir up chemistry without the usual love song or romantic clinch. Feore and Dale are supported by a worthy cast, most notably James Blendick as Eliza's father Alfred, Joyce Campion as Mrs. Higgins, Barry MacGregor as Colonel Pickering and Laird Mackintosh as Freddy Eynsford-Hill. As is often the case with musicals the music shines right alongside the stars. Because the songs are so much a part of this play, rolling smoothly along with the action, they are not as familiar as in other musicals. Few have been recorded by other people; after all, no one but Eliza Doolittle could sing The Rain in Spain. Yet, the production for Wouldn't It Be Loverly and Get me to the Church on Time are worth the ticket. The latter song in particular, is an exciting, dazzling number aided by the colourful cos- tumes of designer Debra Hanson. Also fun, but in a different way, is the terribly British Ascot Gavotte. In the program notes there are 10 reasons listed why My Fair lady should never have succeeded on Broadway in 1956. Yet, it has become one of the most popular musicals ever. Stratford's treatment of it is one more success story in this play's history. My Fair Lady runs until Nov. 10. The role of Henry Higgins will be played by Geraint Wyn Davies from July 14 to Sept. 14 and by Monette from Sept. 18 to Nov. 10. ern 2Sth CWPathn,9- .AnniPersaT Townsend-O'Reilly Charlene Roseanne Townsend Miller hints at trustee's value to the school board • I
