An
odd
habit
By Rev. Brent Kipfer
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
When I hear the word "eccentric,"
usually think of someone who puts
range juice on their Cheerios or
is peanuts in the shell or enjoys
raping their fingernails on a
lackboard.
Last week The Toronto Star added
hristian worship to that list. The
tar was making friendly reference
some of the odd qualities of John
anley, Canada's new minister of
nance. It said, "His eccentricities
re wholesome: he attends church
gularly, he never swears, he runs
arathons and he cheerfully
merses himself in policy details."
Punishing your body in a
arathon or taking glee in
overnment policy certainly should
ualify as abnormal behaviour. But
ttending a worship service?
Many Canadians would agree with
arious 2nd century Roman writers
ho described Christian worship as
foolish" and even "insane."
Why destroy a wonderful
pportunity for a Sunday morning
leep-in? Why waste valuable time
hat could be spent catching up on
ousehold chores or improving your
olf swing? Why risk the possibility
f a boring sermon or uninspiring
usic when you could opt for a
ideo or CD and relax in the comfort
f your own home?
Why bother?
There are all sorts of things that
an happen when you come to
orship. You might find music that
oes make you want to sing - or a
ermon that actually catches your
ttention. You might find a decent
up of coffee. Or maybe good
onversation. You might even meet
od.
Aside from anything else that
appens at Christian worship
atherings, we want to spend time in
he presence of a God whose love
tops at nothing - a holy God who
as willing to die on a cross for our
ake. We worship a God who is
orthy of our attention, our devotion
nd our praise.
This does not happen naturally. It
an feel awkward because we are all
ovices when it comes to true
orship. God brings us into
nfamiliar territory where we step
ut of the driver's seat and let God
ake our place.
What does it mean to live with
esus as the centre of our lives?
hat does it mean to put God ahead
f everything else?
Christian worship trains us to live
God's world, God's kingdom. It
howl us how to receive the freedom
nd life of Jesus Christ. Worship
aches us new habits and tunes our
ar to the frequency of our Master's
oice.
When we gather for worship, we
e preparing for a future day which
ohn speaks about in Revelation 5.
n that day, the victory of Jesus will
e revealed and every creature will
ather around the throne of God to
orship. Voices will rise to sing, "To
e One seated on the throne and to
e Lamb (Jesus) be blessing and
onour and glory and might forever
rid ever!"
Christian worship is an
pportunity to warm-up for that day.
It does seem kind of eccentric - an
d habit - in a world with different
riorities. Then again, the God of
esus Christ is an unconventional
ind of Master.
A time of honour
Following the anniversary service at Ethel United Church on Sunday, there was another
service in the community. The Mount Pleasant Decoration service was well attended later that
afternoon. (Vicky Bremner photo)
