FROM WALTON
Duffs news
The Sunday school silent auction
was very successful last week. The
opportunity to browse the items
culminated on Friday evening with
quite a few members trying to get in
last-minute bids. The items were to
be picked up by Monday and paid
for. They were quite pleased with the
results.
Duff's United .Church held its
anniversary service at the farm of
Neil and Marie McGavin in a
beautifully decorated tent with
greenery and white flowers.
Leona McDonald greeted
everyone as they arrived and Neil
McGavin videotaped the service as
over 80 enjoyed the morning.
A hymn-sing was conducted prior
to the start of service and the musical
talents of Glenda Morrison, Phyllis
Mitchell, Jamie Mitchell, violinists
Murray and Sherri McCall, Graeme
Craig and Gloria Wilbee on guitar
were wonderful.
Joan Tuchlinsky thanked everyone
involved in the anniversary service,
especially Rev. Jeff Hawkins. She
welcomed everyone and asked that
they sign the guest book. She also
thanked the silent auction committee
for their hard work and successful
venture.
The youth choir sang If God was
One of Us.
The Sunday school promotion
certifigates and awards were
presented to the children. The
teachers were thanked for their
leadership and Heidi McClure was
presented with a gift for her years of
service as teacher and treasurer.
The Sunday school will be using a
new curriculum this fall called
"Seasons of the Spirit".
For the children's time Rev.
Hawkins needed a volunteer and
MacKenzie McGavin was his helper.
He blindfolded Alex Melady and
then tested him by asking him
question and having him touch
things. He asked Alex to have faith
in him (Rev. Hawkins) that he would
not hurt him or lead him astray.
Rev. Hawkins explained that
people need to have faith in God,
even though they cannot see him.
The offering was taken by Jeff
McGavin and Jan Wilbee. The choir
sang a new refrain of Jesus Loves
Me.
The food bank is in urgent need of
donations of non-perishable food
items. Bring them to church and they
will be delivered.
Church is on holidays from July 7
- July 28. Greeters June 16 are Bruce
and Katrin Godkin.
The WUCC held its meeting on
Wednesday evening upstairs at
Duff's church.
The meeting started with prayer by
Olene Dennis who also did a
reading. The scripture was read by
Gloria Love. Edith Wey conducted
the business of the evening. The
topic, Three Coins, • from the
scriptures was presented by Doreen
Hackwell.
Monday night the Walton Bantam
girls defeating Listowel by a score of
15-8. The Walton Brewers
intermediate men's fastball team
played Tuesday evening and defeat
the Lieury Jrs. 6-0. On Thursday
evening the Bookies played the
Misfits of the ladies slowpitch.
Heading off to Lunge Haven
Cottages near Lindsay were Harvey
Hoggart, Matt Lee, Fred, Darrell and
Pearl and Harold McCallum
celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary on June 8 with family
and friends. An open house was held
at their home at RR1, Walton.
Both the bride, the daughter of Ed
and Idella Regele and groom, the son
of Noble and Dorothea McCallum
were born in McKillop Twp. They
were married from the home of the
bride's parents on June 6, 1952, with
Rev. Livingston attending.
Attending at the wedding were
Shirley, Alex, and Richard Glanville,
Geraldine Dennis, Lloyd Regele,
Mary Foster and Bill Fisher.
After the ceremony the couple
honeymooned in Niagara Falls and
Adam McClure, Carmen, Stephen
and Christopher Bernard, Jason and
Matthew Shortreed. They were
fishing in Sturgeon Lake and Jason
Shortreed tied for catching the
largest pickerel at 20 1/4 inches.
They had good weather and lots of
fun.
Away attending a wedding in Sault
Ste. Marie were Martin and
Catherine Baan. Their son Jerry and
wife Doreen from New Hamburg
drove them. They attended grandson
Jonathan's wedding. He is the son of
Nellie (Baan) Booker.
Also attending from Walton were
John and Mary Baan and Dave and
Dianne Baan.
A local couple celebrated their
25th wedding anniversary on
Saturday evening. Ross and Julie
Mitchell were married June 4, 1977.
Congratulations Ross and Julie.
Detroit. They returned to the
McCallum homestead where they
farmed.
They have five children — Paul,
Ron, Carl, Marion and Joyce. The
family includes 10 grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
Pearl enjoys cooking and looking
after the lawn and grounds as well as
singing in the church choir. Harold
enjoys farming, hunting and fishing.
They both like to travel when they
can.
Guests arrived to celebrate with
the McCallums from Long Island,
NewYork; Ohio; Point Clark;
Midland; Manitoulin Island and St.
Catharines.
Another party on the weekend was
the Stewart reunion held at the home
of Neil and Marie McGavin. They
gathered in the midafternoon and
enjoyed a deli'cious meal of
barbecued pork chops by the
families and salads by the WUCC
ladies. They had around 50 guests
from around Ontario. They enjoyed
rides on the old fire truck to the
pond, the pit and the bush. They
enjoyed swimming and the great
outdoors.
Celebrating 40 years of marital
bliss was Neil McGavin and wife
Marie on Sunday afternoon. They
entertained family and friends to a
Cardiff-catered meal of barbecued
beef and ham, and salads. They also
celebrated their 65th and 60th
birthdays and called it a 125-year
birthday celebration.
Around 200 family, friends and
employees gathered. People from the
Ontario Retailers of Farm
Equipment Dealers Association were
also on hand.
There were many speeches and
jokes of course. Members of the
wedding party spoke of the happy
couple. Congratulations to them.
Sunday was an absolutely
beautiful day for Walton's motocross
race. After having been rained out in
May, the sight of the rising sun
brought sunny smiles to the faces of
organizers, workers and racers.
There were over 700 entries for
racing which is one of the biggest
turnouts for this year in Ontario.
Local boys racing were Chris and
Devon Blake and Matt McLellan.
Devon was fortunate enough to win
his races and Matt placed in the top
10. Chris had the misfortune of
crashing but luckily was unhurt.
Congrats to the boys.
Celebrating 50 years of marriage
on Saturday was Harold and Pearl
McCallum. The drop in from 1 - 3
p.m. was well attended and then 225
family, friends and neighbours
gathered to enjoy a meal by Ron
Williamson Catering.
Some of the original wedding
party were able to attend as well.
They showed slides of Pearl and
Harold from their wedding through
their.family years until now.
Guests attended from Manitoulin
Cincinnatti, Dayton and all
across Ontario. It was a wonderful
day and the weather was great.
Some guests stayed on a few days
vacation and now all is back to
normal.
Congratulations to the
McCallums.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were Scott Dalton, Tom Love,
Jacob McGavin, Jim Campbell,
Ernie Lewington, Robbie McClure,

WLS
students
talk
ladybugs
The Walton Little School spent
the week learning about ladybugs.
They read The Grouchy Ladybug by
Eric Carle and enjoyed seeing them
in the science centre:
They learned aphids eat leaves
and ladybugs eat aphids.
They enjoyed puppet shows and
the children presented the Very
Busy Spider showing using finger
puppets. They knew their lines very
well. They are enjoying their
playground equipment in the lovely
weather outside.
If there are any volunteers that
could help with the construction of
shelves at the school call.
A rummage sale is being planned
for June 22 from 8 - noon.
