U-1 is play Elma
The Wingham/North Perth
Bantam lacrosse team played four
games last week and managed an
even split of the action.
Wednesday, June 5 had Wingham
playing host to a team from Elora.
The visitors were given a tough
welcome and ended up on the wrong
end of a 9-1 decision.
Wingham got off the mark quickly
with three goals in the first. Jason
Hamilton scored the first with a little
help from Cory Chapman. He was
followed by Xavier O'Krafka and
Matt Tell with unassisted markers
before the period was over.
The second period was more of
the same with Tell netting the first
two markers in the period with an
assist on the second from Drew
Campbell. Jason Hamilton then put
one behind the Elora goalie with a
helper from Chris Crawford.
Chase Chapman scored from Tell
before Campbell got the team's fifth
on a play from Dak Youngblut and
Chapman with an assist to match his
goal. Elora got their only goal in the
last minute of the second period as
Wingham netminder Christopher
Crawford successfully defeated all
other Elora efforts.
The third period had few scoring
fireworks as only Tell with an assist
from Campbell was able to put the
ball in the net.
Youngblut is a new player for
Wingham and his handy assist
should help him settle in. Tell and
Campbell came over from the
affiliated North Perth team playing
out of Kurtsville to provide a little
help.
On June 9 the team travelled to
Arthur for a tournament. Their 9
a.m. game proved a challenge as the
early travel didn't seem to agree
with the team. A strong team from
Halton Hills took advantage of
Wingham's sluggish start to hammer
home three first period markers.
In the second Hamilton scored
from Cory MacDonald.
Unfortunately for Wingham the
opposition kept up the attack scoring
six of their own. Halton Hills scored
two in the third and Youngblut
replied with his first as a Wingham
player on a pass from Jason Keupfer.
The 11 - 2 loss and a pep talk from
coach Erica Coghlin seemed to fire
up the team as they overwhelmed
their next opponent from Shelburne.
The 10 - 3 win was anchored by
MacDonald in net who only allowed
Shelburne one goal a period.
Cory Chapman initiated the
team's flying start by scoring the
first three goals, aided and abetted
by Dickey Greg, Kuepfer and
Hamilton. Hamilton liked the look
of his teammate's hattrick and
promptly scored Wingham's next
' three with Chapman returning
earlier compliments and O'Krafka
providing help.
Hamilton and Chapman each
scored in the third. Crawford scored
on a pass from Chase Chapman.
Youngblut scored when his long
hard shot from the centreline eluded
the Shelburne goalie.
The consolation final was against
Arthur's number one team and they
proved too much for a weary
Wingham squad. The home side
came out hard and fast and had
potted nine before Hamilton,
assisted by 0' Kano put one by the
Arthur netminder.
Frustration and weariness got the
Soccer results
The Brussels U-9s hosted Elma II
on May 27 and booted their way to
a 2-0 victory.
On May 27, the Howick soccer
team came in to play Brussels U- 15
squad. The hosts lost this one 7-4.
The U-17 Brussels soccer team
faced Palmerston in a contest at
home on May 30. The visitors won
5-3.
better of the team as they played
much of the third period with a
packed penalty box.
The Bantams next play against
Guelph on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in
Wingham.
It was all defence June 4 when
Elma l travelled to Brussels to take
on the U-11 squad.
Early in the contest, Robert
Cronin made a smooth pass to
Randy Zwep then received one from
Thomas Johnston along the
sidelines. But the strong Elma team
thwarted a good offensive attack.
Andrew Lindsay almost broke
free for a rush after picking up a
pass from Heather Hill, but was
slowed by Elma's defense.
Vanessa Ropp played well through
centrefield, deflecting the ball off
her body and them clearing the
Brussels end. Elli Schimanski had a
good game, playing well along the
sides and working hard through the
crowd.
Going into the second half with no
score, Gavin Buwers and Lindsay
tried to hit the net, but the Elma
goalie was steady.
'Midway through the second half,
Elma managed to beat Brussels
goalie David Grobbink, to tally the
only score of the game.
Cam Schlosser handled the
defence along with Nick Durrell,
Matthew Cardiff, Chris Becker and
Johnston, helping netminder
Grobbink protect the goal aga-
inst heavy pressure for their
opponent.
Denise Thalen made a good play
late in the game. stopping a rush
along the sidelines by forcing the
attacker away from the goal.
Brussels next home game is
Tuesday, June 18, at 7 p.m. behind
the BMG Arena.
