Keith Mulvey, a Brussels member
of the group, brought along two
good-natured "guinea pigs" who had
consumed different types of alcohol
over similar periods of time to
illustrate the breathalizer readings.
When approached afterward and
asked their thoughts about the
meeting, the majority of people felt
the meeting was very informative
and expressed interest in attending
meetings in Ethel in the future.
When asked what impression of
Ethel he had come away with after
Wednesday night's meeting Johnson
replied that "these are very genuine
and caring citizens who came and
openly expressed their thoughts with
us on how OPP can best meet their
needs.
"Actually," he continued, "I was
telling one of my superiors about the
meeting the next day and told him it
was probably the most valuable
public meeting I have been to in the
last year."
Nancy's Cafe in Ethel is
scheduled to close in July of this
year.
Ethel United Church had their 125
year celebration on Sunda'y. Beth
Earl explained there was much
reminiscing and remembenng. The
Sunday school played the bells and
musical entertainment for the day
was Sara Baker and Shalin Diehl,
the Sunday school bell ringers, and
Old Tyme Friends who played
throughout the service.
Donald Dunbar played piano at
the cemetery decoration service.
Joan Golden led the service at the
church and Richard Golden led the
service at the cemetery.

Joan Golden and Gary Earl stand beside the new sign
which was dedicated as part of the Ethel United Church
anniversary celebration this past Sunday. Another
interesting feature at the church was the showing of the
new church banner quilted out of old ties by Beth Earl and
her mother Georgina Smith. (Vicky Bremner photo)

Many curious and concerned Ethel
and area residents turned out for the
Brussels COP (Community Oriented
Policing) meeting held in Ethel last
Wednesday evening.
Although the group generally
meets once monthly in Brussels, a
need to hold a "town hall" sort of
meeting in Ethel was recognized.
Special interest topics such as ATVs,
fatal vision goggles and breathalizer
tests were addressed. As well, there
was a presentation by Crime
Stoppers.
Shawn Johnson, OPP Operations
Manager/Crime Stoppers co-
ordinator for Huron County was at
the meeting to present information
on Crime Stoppers and, along with

Old ties
create new
church
banner
To honour the 125th anniversary
of Ethel United Church an idea was
thought of to make a banner that
would be a reminder of the special
day. One Sunday morning during
announcements, Beth Earl spoke to
the congregation about an idea to
make a banner from old ties. With
scissors in hand, she clipped her
husband Garry's tie off. She said
that she never liked the tie and this
was going to be the first donation.
This was everyone's chance to
get rid of those unwanted ties. A
colourful array of almost 200 ties
was donated in just two weeks.
They were sewn together, then put
on the background and Beth and her
mother Georgiana Smith quilted the
ties in place.
Blest Be The Tie That Binds was
an appropriate title to honour 125
years of faith, fellowship and fun at
Ethel United Church.
