It's not much fun on a nice summer day, but somebody has
to do it. Sandra Machan kept up with the dishes, while the
community took advantage of the perfect weather to attend
the Brussels United Church garden party. (Vicky Bremner photo)

Algonquin Park is just as beautiful
this year as last and every year since
it was first established in 1893, the
many colours of spring right there
waiting to be appreciated. We spent
part of last week tenting with very
few other campers — pretty nice, a
private party with the elk, beavers,
black flies, bunnies, birds and did I
mention black flies?
Change and growth are part of life
but sometimes it takes a bit of
thought to get past the good old
days, Something as simple as a
missing tree makes the mind go to
years past. The missing blue spruce
in the north end of the village got
chats going about Dunc McDonald
and Verna and Ruth Huepfer and the
several other owners of the house-
good memories of good folk.
Then the orchard was transformed
this week. Alice Brothers can recall
over 80 years of apple trees on that
land with names like Thompson,
McLaughlin, Stratychuk, Cardiff
and lastly Gunthardt — all giving us
good apples, cider and honey as well
as the service and friendship that
comes from folks looking after the
needs of their community.
The United Church workers are
relaxing have a very successful
congregational dinner on Sunday at
the BMG Centre. The weather was
conducive to leisurely visits with
friends before and after the bountiful
buffet prepared by the church
members. Meat, potatoes and pie
still can draw a crowd.
The piano students of Emily
Cousins did their parents proud as
they had their recital on Sunday
afternoon in the United Church.
Their lessons of the last year were
played to near perfection.
Congratulations to Warren Wray.
His ceremony of celebration was
held in Waterloo on Saturday as we
received his Bachelor of Arts from
the university there. Way to go
Warren. We knew you could do it.
Bye now, Betty G. W.

-The Brussels Ladies Auxiliary
held its supper meeting on Monday
evening.
They have a catered wedding at
the end of the month and extra help
is always appreciated. Branch
members are also needed to help.

Comrade Goui Workman and
Comrade Doreen Rutledge are both

It's been a busy week for some at
the Branch with last minute phone
calls for donations, setting tables,
arranging items, making vouchers
and certificates, to help make a
successful auction. Friday night had
quite a few in to view and make
bids. Saturday was slow to start but
by mid-afternoon had picked up.
The live auction held at 3:30 p.m.
was superbly done by auctioneer
Kevin McArter. The mad last
minute scramble before 4:30 p.m. to
make bids ended the day on 'a high
note.
There was such a wide variety of
items and everything was greatly
appreciated.
The Friday night supper of
hamburg casserole was enjoyed by
a good crowd and this week is
turkey.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 12 tables of avid players. The
lucky couple to be winners were
Lloyd and Lillian Appleby with 82
points. Coming in second place
were Ed Stewart and Glen Sellers
with 75 points. The third place team
were partners Eileen Mann and Mac
Smith with 70 points. The lucky
lone hand winners were Isabelle
Gray and Neil. Hatt. Euchre is held
every two weeks.
The Sunday night singles dance
crowd enjoyed the music of The
Westernaires. Even though it was
pretty warm, over 90 crowded the
dance floor to the lively music.
Remember to save those pop tabs.
